Great interview. Fitz I feel like always gives a good interview and there’s some real good insight like him immediately getting in touch with Grier from his first day as Sharks GM about Timo, how much being a part of Poile’s final trade and draft pick in the NHL meant to him (kinda curious what deals he may have been discussing with Nashville at the trade deadline), going a little in depth about how he’s handled Holtz’ development so far, and his experiences with expansion teams.
Also apparently we need to get Tom his silver stick for 1000 NHL games!
Really does inspire a lot of confidence, and his long career as a hockey player has given him fantastic insight into hockey culture/attitudes/egos. But he is also a leader.
Really like what he said about how he handled the Timo trade, and it’s been incredibly consistent. I remember him saying that he’s confident Jersey will sell itself to Timo. He told Timo he wasn’t going to pressure him or his agent, and that he has believed in both the state of New Jersey and the Devils organization.
Kind of funny hearing him reflect on the Meadowlands we all know what that was like if you were around. It’s been several times where he has acknowledged what New Jersey and the Devil’s reputation is, and that he’s confident both those reputations will be shattered once players get here.
It really does seem like Fitz has the perfect blend of on Ice experience to relate with hockey players, and also the mind to do a lot of smart business.
