That Jarry giveaway remind anyone of last years playoff debacle? No-look backhand to an Islander. God, he sucks too. We need 2 new goalies this off season.
Short of Mike Sullivan dying form a sudden heart-attack this team is absolutely cooked. Can we please fucking move on.
Get rid of Sully and both of our goalies. Sully's system doesn't work anymore, the game has evolved. And people thinking it's all Desmiths fault. No, it's both Jarry and Desmith. A new coach and goalies are a must
Our top two have made a mess of our bottom six and goalie situation.
Fire Sullivan and Hextall
Can Carter just retire?
Soooo, WHEN are they bringing up ANYONE from Wilkes????..what does it take
lmao wait why shaler?!
DK why no mention of Jarry and his TWO back breaking goals in 3rd?…and O'Connor's bad play at blue line that led to first goal?…I know those are your guys but come on
This team needs OUTSIDE help. They need a third line center and a goalie. If they can't do that, whatever.
Play out the season, then completely revamp, or better yet, replace the bottom of the lineup. I mean, ALL OF THEM.
I want to say that I'll always appreciate Sully for what he did for the Penguins, but it's time to gut this team.
The fact that you never criticize Sullivan for playing the third line as constituted, only Hextall, makes you lose all credibility, Dejan. You and your fellow media folks just keep repeating Sullivan is a great coach. He might be but he’s part of the problem with this team right now and has no answers. He’s stale here. There are different player combinations he could try, player usage he could try (scratch Carter for example) and he could change the system and actually coach the PP for a hot minute. The front office is to blame for sure but so is the coach. Own it
At this point shoot for Gibson from the ducks in the hopes that we can get them to retain some salary. Jarry probably isn’t the long term goalie. The third and fourth line need to be just blown up and Sully to allow some WBS guys to play.
While listening to this, I just checked Fenway Sports Group website. There isn't 1 F**king mention of the Pittsburgh Penguins NOT 1. WTF
I love Burke's involvement with inclusivity initiatives like Hockey is for Everyone. I just wish he was a little more exclusive with the team he and other management choose to put on the ice.
DK, in your experience, what is the mindset of underperforming players on bad contracts? This isn't to say that one person is ever to blame for the whole team, but we Pens fans shift our attention to that one guy who just seems to be an anchor: Scuderi, Johnson, now Carter. Do you think that they're sensitive to it, and how do they deal with it? Have you noticed any commonalities in your experience with them?
Penguins are 0-10 against Carolina, New Jersey, and Islanders this year (currently on a nice 9 game losing streak to division opponents). They have 1 more game against Jersey and the Islanders and I see no reason to think they are going to win either (especially New Jersey who are just flat out better than the Pens). They also play the Rangers 3 times within 6 days in the middle of March and I can absolutely see them losing all three. This team just isn't good. Average/below average goaltending, abysmal defensive play, and non existent 3rd and 4th line on offense. Not to mention a GM that seemingly does nothing and a coach that's stuck in 2017 and thinks his team can still out skate and out talent everyone else which they very clearly can't do anymore. I'm really not sure how they're even still in playoff contention with all the losing streaks they go on and how bad they are within their own division. I think we're going to see a lot of changes in the offseason after they either miss the playoffs or get swept in the opening round.
That second Islanders goal was a killer. Jarry leaves a tiny space and it leaks through. Hextall is doing nothing and the playoffs are just becoming more of a pipe dream. The penguins as time goes by are becoming more sellers than buyers. Hextall may have given this team the kiss of death by waiting so long.
It’s hard to see how this team makes the playoffs now given the upcoming schedule and their current form.
At what point do they cross that red line and decide to maybe sell at the deadline?
You CANNOT keep insisting that you like this group as constructed. The Carter and Kapanen deals have effectively torpedoed this season, and threaten to ruin next season unless some steps are taken to unload at least one of them.
If Hextall doesn’t want to do something, maybe Burke needs to start forcing his hand. Burke has done extraordinarily little up to this point. If the Pens were looking to hire what is essentially a 200 lb paperweight, then I guess they’ve succeeded.
I think the problem runs much deeper than the 3rd line. What happened last night was precisely what happens in the playoffs…Opposition is being outplayed, so it is time for them to switch things up…they go to chippy/nasty mode, pens dont like being hit and other teams get in their head and the pens are toast. The Pens are soft..They spend a lot of time picking themselves up off the ice..They dont have another mode to switch too when things arent going great. They could not have played any harder than they did last night…still couldnt beat a team with 4 forwards and their best player out….at home.
I really think that we are fooling ourselves by even mentioning the word “playoffs” we should be through the first few stages such as denial and fear etc… time to enter the final stage of acceptance. We may just find a way to sink to the very bottom by April
DK I'm torn between seeing every year as the best remaining chance for this core to get that much-desired 4th cup and being realistic that a team in the NHL needs to be bad for a while to reload on talent. Since this is some sort of purgatory we seem stuck in, I'll ask you this: why is management so inert? Are there rumblings that the GMs are forbidden to get rid of people wholesale? Could they simply put Carter on waivers? Could they buy him and Kapanen out? Is Carter retiring? Would waiving players count against the cap for years to come? This slow death is a misery we should have been spared somehow and even though I'm a fan who understands the good times can't go on in perpetuity, this is not the ride off into the sunset we wanted for the Crosby/Malkin/Letang era.
Fire this brain dead GM! The Carter and Kap contracts are inexcusable!
Dk would it have been better to have lost 1 or two top 6 forwards to have a much better 3rd and 4th line
