The niche for a #3 goalie is a solid vet who sucks just enough that they can clear waivers, since the Leafs are obviously not going to carry 3 goalies. His .917 sv% in 63 playoff games is pretty nice too
Before people freak out over this, do yourself a favour and go to CapFriendly and sort Free Agents by goaltenders and see what else is available. The list of goalies is 14 players long. Only 7 of them played NHL games last year and the list shortens to 3 when taking goalies who played at least 5 games. Jones is tied with Leaf Legend Michael Hutchinson for youngest amongst the 4. The 3rd goalie market is slim pickings and its better to have insurance with a guy who had *some* success even if it was a long time ago just incase disaster strikes instead of relying on Keith Petruzulli and Dennis Hildeby.
So now I won’t be biting nails during that inevitable time of the season where at least one of our goalies are injured.

He did go 27W and 13L last season, not a bad 3rd goalie IMO.
He is, in fact, a veteran.

Why are people concerned about waivers? All three goalies (Sammy, Woll, and Jones) add up to 5.16 mil in cap space. That’s peanuts for the entire position and extrememly manageable
