As a Philly guy living in Denver, and goes to a bunch of Denver games, he was great out here. He and Brink were really good together. I do worry about Brink’s size in the NHL, so gut says Rizzo might be better in the NHL, but we’ll see if they can play themselves out of the AHL first.

Based on what I’ve read, he has a chance to be a fine bottom 6 guy. Could just be a very good AHL guy though. If nothing else, it’ll be cool to watch him and Brink play together again and see if their chemistry can translate to the pro game. Essentially got him and a 5th for nothing, so it’s all good no matter what happens. Always nice to add promising prospects, especially at the center position.

No. His skating is apparently dreadful. Guessing AHL at best.

Doubtful honestly. But ill gladly take a 5th rd pick and over PPG college player with NHL *potential* any day of week.

Not bad value for a guy we bought out.

If the Canes were ok giving him up, probably not.

No best case scenario he’s a fourth line guy but it is what it is

He’s a long shot prospect but honestly a fifth and literally anything for TDA is kind of what my max hope was when FA began. Won’t kw what kind of role he can carve out till we see him in the AHL though.

Honestly we got the best case scenario in the TDA saga. Didn’t waste a retain spot, got a pick and a prospect for a guy with almost zero value league wide. Carolina and Philly did each other a solid by going the buyout and second trade, and it even worked out for TDA since he’s now getting two paychecks. Rizzo can fizzle out and I still say this was a win for all parties involved.

I feel like whenever there is an article like this about how a later round prospect could be good fans either say he’s nothing special or say we overhype prospects too much (and the article is doesn’t really hype him up, it’s basically just his CV). Probably a combination of over-positivity from clickbait titles and fans general malaise about prospects, but there is a lot of room between being a superstar and being nothing at all and almost all players will fall in between.

Rizzo is a high skill center with good vision but bad foot speed. The Flyers have a real lack of center prospects, the prospect pool is better with Rizzo than without.

You also can’t ignore his production, as a 2nd line freshman he was almost ppg, and after most of the high end players left he took another step. His ppg over the last two years is the same as Alex Lafreniere (not the NYR one obviously) and Matt Coronato, and he was basically the same age as Laf and is only a year older than Coronato. He also had a higher ppg over the last two seasons than Matthew Knies, they are dramatically different players but Knies also got to play with NCAA superstars both years, it shows that Rizzo’s production is quite impressive.

We can look at Rizzo as being very comparable to Cole Knuble, same size and position, both have skill and smarts, and both have real issues with speed. Knuble’s best case scenario would be to produce the way Rizzo has in his first two years in college.

Will Rizzo turn into an NHLer? Who knows, but he’s not a nothing prospect. And having him turn pro after this season could give him an opportunity to get a bigger role with the Phantoms given the lack of center depth that could help propel him to the NHL.

Depth prospect who’s worth picking up for cheap so we can throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and see what sticks.

Noah Cates was a 5th rd pick long shot. Whether it works or not, nice job from Danny B!
