Teams will want to take advantage of Treliving. Come trade deadline, though, making Nylander available could set the Leafs up for the future.

The Nylander storyline just gets more interesting with each passing day. Methinks the end result of all this will be Nylander being traded. Matthews, Marner, and Nylander are all valuable players BUT the team can only afford so many high priced stars before something gives. The Leafs are at that point now. Matthews deserves to be the highest paid player on the team. Marner is a unique playmaker who's also good for 20-30 goals a season. Nylander is a talented winger and has proven himself in the playoffs when the others were no shows but in the end he's expendable. The Leafs could trade him and get a very good player in return and I suspect they'll be just as competitive without Nylander.
If I'm not mistaken the original five left were Smith, Karlsson, Marchessault, and Theodore and McNabb on D, right?

JT left New York. So Matthews could do the same – giving himself hope for playoff success say in Pittsburgh with his buddy Dubas. If that case ends up as true – maybe Nylander holding out to be signed after Auston is a good thing – if Leafs Executives continue paying JT, Marner and Nylander NHL top dollars for only regular season success and mostly playoff disappointments.
During the playoff success short period – Leafs fans did chant “We want Florida” – and of course that didn’t end well.
Good thing for Leafs fans is just be grateful for top 25% regular season successes and Leaf individual records. Maybe Marner will continue with those?

If Matthew's signs for 13.5m per and his production is 25% more valuable than Willie's.
Willie would want 25% less than Matthew's, which would be 10.125m per, which is around what he's asking for, which is fair if Matthew's isn't going to give the team a discount either. Why should Willie be the only one to do so?
Also if Matthew's signs for 13.5m per, Marner would want 12.15m per because that's 10% less than Matthew's contract, and that's around where Marner's value is at compared to Matthew's, to be fair.
Seems Matthew's is trying to wait Willie out tho, so he could make more, but good for Nylander for sticking to his guns. Because if Matthew's really wanted Nylander to stick around, he would have signed for a price, that would have left enough for his "buddies" Willie and Mitch to stick around already.
Marner has hit his ceiling. Unfortunately, he doesn’t deserve a raise on his next contract. He was over paid on his last one.
You can not pay matthews and Marner 13+ and 12+ mil per season. Neither are worth it. They should have both been traded for good players with better salary control at reasonable rates. The leafs will never have the depth to win the cup paying these players so much money. They’re playoff performance shows they can not win on there own. If I was GM Marner and Nylander would have been traded in blockbuster trades before no trades kicked in. Sign Matthews at 13 and done.

Nylander has a modified no trade clause so essentially he is in the driver's seat at the moment. If he chooses to play hardball and walks for nothing next year it would be a huge loss. Everything you have said in this video is bang on. If Matthews signs for $14, Marner will want $13 and Nylander is either at $12 or $11. Flat cap blues. In my opinion Reilly makes too much, the Klingberg deal compounds the cap issues making it difficult to improve the defence. The only solution I see is to move Nylander for a bruiser type defenceman and pick or prospect but who is the dance partner for such a trade knowing that Nylander will command Marner type dollars when it comes to resigning him? If I were Treliving I would try and move Nylander now for a D-man and a pick or prospect so that the incoming player has a full training camp with the Leafs and has a chance to learn the systems before the start of the regular season. Obviously with all of the one-year deals of the free agent signings so far, Treliving is banking on skill and toughness upfront to win the cup. A Nylander trade frees up some capital, plus could help to stock the cupboard in case of injuries to key players come playoff time.

If Nylander at 11 mill would be overpaid compared to some of the other elite wingers in the league, so is Matthews overpaid at 11 mill even NOW when compared to some of the other elite centers. No way in h**l Matthews should ever earn even close to McDavid and Mackinnon!
Matthews will be a Penguin no later than the 2027-28 season and possibly earlier. No way does he want to rot in Canada for the rest of his career. #SmartGuy

Nylander using his own teammates as comparables is not usually done, at least publicly. Be like Draisatl complaining he makes 4M less than McDavid. Think you're right, Nylander going to wait this out. Treliving likely wants him gone, but Shanahan has final say. Trouble is, what team going to trade assets for him not knowing what he'll sign for. He has to come down from 10M to around 8.8M-9M. They'll still trade him, this can't continue, with 4 players swallowing up more than half the cap. It's ridiculous.

I'm guessing eventually Matthews at least 13, Marner at least 12, and Nylander at least at 9, that's a bunch, $34M plus, Tavares wiill likely extend for, say, around 8, the core 4 2 years down the road likely will be around $42M or more, that's still too top heavy even with a cap increase
Matthews will likely get $13M plus. How has he performed in elimination playoff games the last 6 years (not including loss to Washington in 2017)? Eichel was the leading scorer in the last playoffs and won the cup. He's paid $10M. ?????????
Every week that goes by the more questions come up about Matthews contract in Toronto. If it isn't done before camp.. it doesn't look good.
Nylander wants no less than 80% of the Matthews contract … so he will wait until the Matthews deal is done before he gets too far into talks.
I’m a leafs and wasn’t happy when they signed Nylander to that ridiculous amount. He hasn’t proven himself. I would have traded him when he held out. Hes a cancer in the locker room. There are better players than him who are cheaper and would fit the team better. And I’m a Nylander fan. Dubus gives in and coddles. At least Treliving won’t give the players what they because they are I think they deserve that money.
I’ve been big fans of these guys all along, but before you start asking for the world try winning something. It sure appears like money is the motivating factor and a Stanley Cup doesn’t factor in a whole lot.
