This monument honours the birth place of Gordie Howe. He was born in a farmhouse on this homestead in what is now the R.M. of Corman Park, in 1928. Gordie and his family moved to Saskatoon soon after.
Gordie began playing hockey in
Saskatoon; his NHL career started in 1946, when at age 18 he signed with the Detroit Red Wings where he played from 1946-1971. The Red Wings retired his #9 sweater in 1972.
Gordie and his wife Colleen had four children, Mark, Marty, Murray, and Cathy.
Gordie’s professional hockey career spanned an amazing six decades. The last game he played professionally he was a remarkable 69 years old
Some of his most memorable hockey years were skating alongside his sons Mark and Marty in both the NHL and WHA
Gordie broke too many hockey records to mention. He was a fierce competitor and his hockey rivals respected his play and tried desperately to avoid his bone crushing body checks and his flying elbows.
Gordie and his beloved wife Colleen, who passed in 2009 are interred in Saskatoon.
