Fun facts, from 2000-2012 we only had 5 1st round selections. Niklas Kronwall (D) in 2000, Jakub Kindl (D) in 2005, Brandon Smith (D) in 2007, Tom McCollum (G) in 2008, and Riley Sheahan (F) in 2010.

In that same timeframe, we drafted 10 players to put up more than 200 points. Only Niklas Kronwall was both a 1st and put up 200 points, though Sheahan was close at 194.

In that same timeframe, we drafted 21 players who played 500 or more games.

Yeah the 1sts might never be top 5 and most have sucked, but it’s an incredibly skewed list. We were a very lucky team for a very long time. Ken didn’t adapt well with drafting defensemen post lockout, but he did draft very well with what he had while Jim Nill was around. Jim Nill left for Dallas in April of 2013.

From 2013 onward, we have had at least 1 first in every year, with a total of 14 in the last 10 years. In that timeframe, we’ve only had 3 players score more than 200 points, Dylan Larkin, Todd Bertuzzi, and Anthony Mantha. Mattias Janmark, who we traded away for a rental, has 183. If it means anything, Raymond has 102 points already in just 156 games, so at least we hit with the 4th.

Since 2013, the only player with more than 500 games played is Larkin. Janmark is second with 486, a full 66 games more than Mantha.

Completely random and bitter feelings, but it’s wild to me that Pittsburgh had theirs five years in a row. Fleury, Malkin, Crosby (Letang in Crosby’s year) consecutively. Yeah, pretty nice to build your cornerstones for multiple Cup runs given that situation.
