DET fan here. Lindstrom has been a #7-8 D-man his whole career who never really panned out for DET. I was surprised when DET re-signed him and that his contract wasn't a two-way contract. I was under the impression that Stevie was trying to trade him away for at least two years but couldn't find any buyers. I suspect that MTL called Steve up and the latter said, "ok we'll take Petry off your hands for a 5th round pick but how about this… a conditional 4th but only if you retain 50% of his salary andbythewayyoualsohavetotakethisLindstromkidoffourhandsgreatit'sadealokaybye!"
I hope it pans out for Lindstrom in MTL.
My question is this… Lindstrom was expected to be a healthy scratch for most of the season soooo… where is Petry going to fit in? Walman and Seider aren't going anywhere. DET has invested in Chariot and talks highly of Maatta. That boots one of the new guys Holl and Ghost or Petry will be a $7.5M/yr healthy scratch.
Wings now have more Defense than they can play. I would guess they'll spend the first 20ish games rotating everyone but Sieder until the new players develop some on ice chemistry.
Hey Shannon what do you think the lineup will be for Detroit’s defense this season? They have like 8 defensemen in Seider, Walman, Määtä, Holl, Chiarot, Petry, Ghostisbehre, and (although unlikely to play up this year) Edvinsson. Someone’s gotta get moved, right?
Hughes made a promise to Petry that he will get him to an American team before the school year starts for his kids. Very classy GM. I think free agent players of the future will give Montreal bonus points for stuff like this.
taken on its own, i think the habs could have gotten more. i would have liked that pick to be a 3rd. and while i like lindstrom, does he beat out kovacevic for 3rd pair RD? are we gonna have to send down barron or xhekaj? gus and kovy would both have to clear waivers. if this was the return, i'd have retained a little less. it's not bad, it is positive, but it could have been better.
taken along with the karlsson deal, we gave up hoffman and pitlick, and are paying 2.3 on petry for 2 years. two players we didn't really want, and a guy who didn't want to be here. we ended up with a 2nd, a 4th, a bottom pair dman, a backup goalie, and a career AHLer. put in that context, we did quite well. we even get some cap space.
Hughes is an IQ hockey man. He began from a negative position with cap issues and ended up with an NHL-caliber goalie plus a defenseman with potential upside, a decent AHL piece…and a draft pick along the way as the team keeps getting younger. Hockey agents turning GM may be more common in the future. The respect agents have for players tends to make the contract negotiation process easier. They are great communicators and straight shooters.
Judging by the response from the Detroit fans and media surrounding the excitement about Petry wearing a Red Wing uniform perhaps they would have been willing to fork over the other 2 Mil.
U have to have a minimum cap. A lot of these young players aremt developed and arent worht the big contracts yet. You sihn solid hlep to play and mentor over thise years at the emds of this conyracts u re sign for cheap or trade away and then sign ur big contract to big young players. And you have to deal with whats availible. Yzerman hasnt done bad. Chiarot and holl fall in this fill an area until deveoplment happens category to me.
habs absolutely lose this trade, with all the young d man coming up that are better then him…i doubt he cracks the line up…which he struggled to do with the redwings….and honestly a 4th to retain 2.3 for 2 years just isnt enough. rare kent L imo
Yzerman getting desperate to make the playoffs. The DeBrincat hype has reached comedic levels. We'll be talking about the Yzerplan still in play for the next 10 years.
I was hoping Petry would stay with the Habs, but yeah, it makes sense. I don't think Lindstrom is going to fit with the Habs. Better to get a tough Russian. Wonder if Alexei Emelin could return!!!
Hughes is showing he’s a players GM meaning he has an agents brain and try’s to treat players well. He really did a solid for Petry like he did with Dadanov Hoffman and Pitlick. I think this will pay dividends when Montreal is ready to make a splash in free agency
Not that sure it was not that much of an hockey trade by the Habs, they probably just wanted to get rid of Petry so why not just send him to his hometown. Class move by Hughes, and not a big risk for Yzerman with Petry at 37,5% of his caphit.
The return was probably somewhat lower than it could have been for the Habs, but it's still fair I guess and Hughes is probably more about to establish a better reputation for the Habs which have been somewhat blemished in the last few years.
lol detroit paying only 37% of petrys contract is unbelievably a good trade for the redwings lindstrom wasn’t going anywhere on this team! lol 🤷♂️🤔👍💪GO WINGS💪little message for the league lookout for detroit this season and next to contenders status! 🤷♂️👍
I think it was a good trade for all parts involved: – relieved money on the cap hit for the Habs by trading away Hoffman’s contract and gaining small future picks – facilitating the Karlson trade for the Sharks and the Pens – granting the trade requested by Pitlick – sending Petry closer to his hometown for a fresh start
The Habs got Petry as part of the big deal and Kent told Petry right away that he would try to move him to Detroit. We wish Petry well. He served the Habs very well for several years. Montreal has always been a great franchise and Kent Hughes is building the next great version and doing it in a classy way. He's moving players who don't want to stay, getting a decent return, and setting up things well for the future. I like it.
Defensive defensemen can take longer to develop. He showed flashes of being a solid third pairing option but going in and out of the lineup due to injury or scratch seemed to stop him from taking the next step. It'll be interesting to see if he gets back on track with a regular spot in the lineup with Montreal.
One thing I wonder with Detroit is who sits out, or if Lalonde looks to utilize 11F/7D more often. The Wings might up with a rather expensive 7th defenseman as a healthy scratch otherwise.

Says alot when you put a condition on 4th Round Pick to make the deal work.
37% of remaining or of total I wonder?
Petry at 3ish is a pretty good number 4!!
As soon as a big trade happens I always search for you on YouTube. Thank you for your channel, buddy❤
why did petry not want to go to san jose instead. ??
What is up with all of these in division trades
Good for Petry getting out of that cesspool bottom feeder franchise
Please tell me I am not the only one who misread the title as “Lidstrom”

I cant get my head around what Yzerman is doing. This added to the Holl deal??????????
Thank you for taking time out of your vacation to report on this trade! LGRW!!

Seems like a win-win trade. I was wondering why Montreal took Petry as that didn't make much sense with the rebuild, but now I get it.
Yzerman proves once again that he has no idea what he is doing
Its fair to say that Petry loves Kent Hughes.
Rank GMs! Please consider doing a GM ranking.
The C's got a lot of nothin' as usual. #1993

What a goat making the vids on vacation
Nice move by the wings and basically for nada.
Yzerman bringing all the Michiganders home. DeBrincat, now Petry. Who's next, Kyle Connor, Connor Hellebyuck, Josh Norris?

Go back to your vacation NOW.

This trade really proves that some deals can benefit all parties equally.
It's more assets for the Habs, and Yzerman can eat even more of Petry's cap hit and trade him for more assets at the trade deadline…
THANKS
I'm still confused on what Yzerman is doing.
Quite happy with the trade as a wings fan.

As a Habs fan, I hate that deal.
It's the 2.3M cap hit for 2024-25 season that is UNACCEPTABLE.

You only needed one jersey, and that is your THG jersey
Thank you for reporting while still being on vacation, kind Sir
Kent Hughes just Jerry McGuire'd the NHL. This is exactly why the Habs will win MULTIPLE cups before the Leafs even come close.
