  1. The best goal scorer in the league…..in the regular season.

  2. As a Leafs fan, I can confidently say. N O T W O R T H.

Also, JT is definitely overpaid. Give that money to Nylander instead, make Willy FEEL appreciated. Oh and maybe make a damn decision on goaltending and then MAYYBE we win a cup lol

  3. Honestly, Mathews deserved this bag.
He’s a player who is very consistent, he can play on every special team, he is the rock of Torontos power play, he’s Torontos best offensive player, he’s arguably Torontos best defensive player, he’s big, he plays most of the season, he’s a leader, and he is only going to get better from here for a long time.
Mathews is not the leafs problem, especially considering the fact that he is such an incredibly complete player, he can do literally anything he needs to.

The Leafs problem is overpaying players who completely lack the advantages Mathews brings. Why does a man in his mid 30s deserve 9 million a year? Why does Marner, an incredibly inconsistent and non playoff performing player deserve 10.9 million? Why does Nylander soon deserve around 10 million when he is absolutely nothing without the other major players on the team? Why is Matt Murray even on the roster? Why is Ryan Reaves making more then a million dollars AT ALL? Why is Jake Muzzin still on the team?

Toronto could be THE powerhouse of the league every single year if money was better spent. If they had made moves on DeBrincat in exchange for Nylander, if they made moves for Chychrun, if they didn’t trade for Murray, if they signed Tavares to a shorter contract that could be made cheaper as he aged, if Marner was paid properly, etc. Such tiny things that could have been done but never were done and now they are screwed. If they made the moves for big players before other teams did like Chychrun or DeBrincat they would be a powerhouse with lots of clutch players willing to take pay cuts to be competitive.

It’s not Mathews fault though. With no proof of winning in sight and some of the worst coaching in the league, what’s the point in taking a pay cut to win? Get your money while it’s there.

  4. "Is he actually worth it?"
    No.
Leafs are broken if they dont retain him, though.

  5. Congrats on Toronto continuing there ability to make immovable roosters.

Ateam looking to rebuild leading into another rebuild

  6. It's what the Leafs had to do. He's a generational talent and you don't just let that walk away.

Sure he could have signed for say $1 million less per year but if that $1 million in cap space is the difference between a Cup and failure that's a front office and/or coaching issue not a Matthews issue

  7. It's good to know Austin Mathews has no aspirations of winning a stanley cup. He couldn't play for a better team.

  8. Comparing Mathew’s to Drai or Mcdavid is like comparing yourself to the guy your girl imagines when she finger blasting herself

  9. Connor McDavid be like "most expensive NHL player ever" hold my beer.
Because when his current contract is over expect $20-25 Million per season. Hopefully the salary cap has expanded by then. But seriously, we all know it is possible.

  10. I can’t get over you calling him the best goal scorer in the world with the season that just happened. Not a good take

  11. Stanley cup? Nah, my boy Auston Matthews is all about that cheddar. Good for him though and I still think the Leafs will remain competitive. If not, then it doesn't matter cause my boy still got paid lol

  12. The NHL has to raise the salary cap. Pascal Siakam is making $37 million a year playing for the Toronto Raptors and everyone's calling Matthews greedy for taking $13 million. What a joke.

  13. I'm honestly so happy he's staying in Toronto. They will win absolutely nothing with him as part of their core.

He is the epitome of an Americanized NHL. All flash.
A regular season player which any serious team can do without. He is a big guy who can score but no killer instinct in the playoffs. He is this generations Eric Lindros, and he should be happy there ain't no Stevens like player anymore to take him out.

He also cost way too much, you can't build a serious team around that.

I wonder, has anyone on the Leafs won any major golf tournaments?

  14. He's gotta be brave to get a deal like that with the maple leafs. He's not gonna know peace for the next four years. Canada fans are too difficult.

  15. One season over 100 points and one season with 60 goals. He is not worth 13.25 a year. He's a very good goal scorer but he doesn't lead the team and a no show in the playoffs.

  16. It’s fair value for the calibre of player he is, and while the cap hit is high it could have been higher if the deal was longer. Besides, he won’t be the highest paid player for long as a certain someone in Edmonton will need an extension soon

  17. Hearing Matthews is bad because he hasn't won a cup is like hearing Messi is bad because he hadn't won the World Cup (at the time). As if hockey and football aren't team sports

  18. Matthews out scored all players in last 5 seasons yet Connor mcdavid over in Edmonton is shining up that rocket Richard trophy cause he out scored matthews best season last season and still managed to make his team mates better… matthews is not a mcdavid level player so this makes me think mcdavid is definitely getting the max next contract

  19. That 13.25 mil should be given to the shut down player on the other team in the playoffs, that keeps him off the score board.
