I’m sorry but it’s just embarrassing that the first guy to ever be able to milk an NHL team like this is a guy who’s won 1 game outside of the 2nd round.

The unfortunate truth is there’s more to playing hockey than simply winning a cup. Matthews puts butts in seats.

If this deal wasn’t signed, and Auston was able to test the open market; 31 other teams would happily pay Matthews 13.25 million per season.
Would it be nice if he signed for less money or longer term, sure ? I don’t think this contract is an overpayment for a player of this caliber.

I mean..the way I see it? He pretty much signed for 8 years anyway? 5 years out of elc then 4 more afterwards just for a couple million more dollars. Pretty good if you ask me

Fuck it, let’s get on the merry go round. Come on leafs, fist me and break my heart again.

Are we really mad that we aren’t locked in at 13.25m to his 30s? We get him for his prime, and then get to reasses at age 31. Seems pretty ideal to me.

Guys a top 5 player in the league. We need to stop bitching and just enjoy the fact that we get to watch the most talented leaf of all time play for us in his prime. Worry about it in 5 years

I still think hes going to play out his career here, Hes taking NBA type contracts, he will get another Max contract and retire here is my bet.

The shorter term could be a good thing. If we don’t get anything done in the next 5 years and his wrist injury persists than we don’t want 34 year old matthews at 13.4 or wtvr. This deal definitely is consistent with him seeming to grab every dollar he can but I’m still glad he’s sticking around and it’s not 15 mil. Sadly that’s where we’re at in Toronto
