Wolf stood out when I saw them them play Bakersfield.
Their success depends on whether or not they're too stupid to not play Wolf.
Now that you've finally done the flames season preview I expect Hanifin and Lindholm to be traded within the next week 🙂
Not a Flames fan, but this team should be MUCH better than they were. I think it's mostly on Huberdeau and Markstrom. If they don't bounce back, Calgary is in trouble.
If ever there was a team that shouldn't have panicked, it's these Flames. It would be interesting to see what happens if they have normal luck. Two seasons ago, they had virtually no injuries and reaped the benefits. Last season, 7-17 in OT/SO, 18-30 in one-goal games. Yes, Sutter probably should have been fired, but there is no great need to have a massive overhaul of the on-ice roster..
The team clearly quit on Sutter, he had no faith in Markstrom and I feel like he floundered because of it. I think he’ll bounce back
As a fan of another Western Conference team, I think this Calgary team is too good to not make the playoffs. Changing the coach will work wonders IMO. I think the real wild card here is what happens at the trade deadline – if key guys remain unsigned beyond this season, do they sell at the deadline to recoup assets or do they go all-in and risk letting guys walk away like Gaudreau in the summer?
If they are going to do ANYTHING
It will have to be a TEAM BOUNCE BACK A TEAM EFFORT PLAYING FOR THE GUY NEXT TO YOU!
It's an absolute joke Calgary missed the playoffs last year with that roster, whether you blame it on a stale core or Daryl Sutter I don't care. I don't see how they fall out of the mix for a playoff spot necessarily unless Hanifin and Lindholm get traded for futures.
Calgary is a team that should have been dominant over the last few seasons, with their best players coming of age, and keep retooling in the hope that it actually happens. Some of the best players have left town. Now they're at the "Look. We fired the coach. Now do something." stage of this team's evolution. Markstrom went from finally being able to post shutouts after leaving behind the horrid defence of the Canucks, to becoming a basket case during his playoff series vs the Oilers and probably drunk dialing his former goalie coach in Vancouver. If Markstrom doesn't return to form this team is in serious trouble. The Flames could finish anywhere between 3rd in the division to completely falling apart and competing for the 1st overall pick in the entry draft. It is a fragile time in Calgary.
Good luck this season, Calgary!
Sincerely, a Minnesota Wild fan.
The difference between ORDINARY and EXTRAORDINARY is just that little EXTRA
Winning streak could help
I think the PP will get better with the addition of assistant coach Marc Savard.
We can run PP1 with Mangiapane, Kadri, Lindholm, Huberdeau and Andersson
And then PP2 could definitely use some of our young players. Something like Pelletier, Backlund, Coronato, Dube and Weegar
Nay-sayers may count Calgary out, but I feel they will challenge for 3rd spot. Last year was an outlier and we only missed by two points. The new players will bring some skill and speed. Our PP will improve so that we won't have as many ties and our goaltending will improve to net us a few more victories.
Everything that could go wrong last year seemed to go wrong, and despite that they were still 16th. A simple regression towards the mean would make them a playoff team this year.
I understand why you left the Flames til last . The upcoming season is so hard to predict . This team has the ability to keep up with the best teams yet the next game they can blow it against the bottom dwellers . They need to figure out how to win in OT , and need to be better on the PP . And most importantly they need to be consistent .
Considering that Calgary lost two 100 point players (Gaudreau, Tkachuk) after winning the division and had one player miss the entire season due to mental illness (Kylington), led the league in goal posts hit, and top quartile in other metrics, not to mention revamping their core, they didn't do that badly. Lots of positives not requiring a whole lot of player personnel changes. The management shake-up alone will be a breath of fresh air to the team.
Everyone seems to forget the big addition of Marc Savard as the Offence/PP coach who's coming in to replace Kirk Muller. The PP under Muller last season was absolutely dreadful and there were even rumors that they weren't practicing the PP at times throughout the season.
Really looking forward to the Heritage Classic.
