My impression is that the fact the Matthews' deal got done first is a bad sign for Nylander staying. I take that as a signal that the organization is giving up on Nylander and I look for him to be traded before the deadline. Not saying he's not worth what he is asking, but that's the the financial reality.
Nylander needs to go, the guy’s not a superstar, he’s just a good player.
If nylander wants more, then he has to earn it! Willy HAS to be a 200 foot player who back checks and goes in the corners and actually battles for the puck. Andrew Willy is NOT under paid, he is only one dimensional and he HAS to prove it or trade him.

I think the leafs best bet is to see how Domi and Bertuzzi perform. If those guys have 30 to 40 goal seasons, resigning them might be the better play. Nylander is worth every penny of 10M if he comes up with a better season than the last one. It’s a great problem to have. Worse case scenario they should sign him for whatever he wants and go bargain bin shopping until the Tavares money becomes available.
At this point – trading Nylander for upgrades to Leaf Defence Men is likely the best way to improve Leaf Playoff performances. The Leaf Core 4 was always poorly designed with two smallish wingers who don’t thrive in the playoffs.
Trade him , points win ya games but defence wins ya championships. I’d trade him to Anaheim for Fowler or Gibson . Both players can play a ton of games and are consistent. Yes we will miss his points but Gibson can steal games or Fowler is that steady D guy in the back they need .
He will sign. probably around 9M…hes worth that..remember hes the only one who didnt get his money on last contract and only one who shows up in big games..If Im treliving I do my best to make it work…once Tavares comes off the books we will get more flexibility; gotta maoeuvre the next couple seasons..
If your moving Willie for a top 4 d-man, than you have to move a d-man with him. Brodie M-NTC contract, Rielly NMC, Gio not much value, McCabe great contract. That leafs RFA Liljegren and Timmins. Lilly is maybe the most underrated leaf on the roster and Timmins doesn't have a lot of real value. So who would the leafs move out with a big Willie trade? Hard decision on who should go.

Taxes aren't a real consideration when playing for the leafs. Leafs players get a cut of jersey sales so all the leafs players are making way more playing in Toronto than anywhere else. End of story
Get the AAV as low as possible for a 3 or even a 2 year deal. 9 or just shy of that. Makes sense , he has his flaws but his speed with the puck and goals will be missed and we just get slower as a team without him to.

I love my leafs. I don’t want to say this . These are great players we have and I am happy to have them don’t get me wrong. These players r just overpaid bums and are just here for the money. They don’t care about winning a cup. That is just my opinion
