I respectfully disagree on Marner, I think he is a 1A. He's a 100 point player (well, very close,) he plays the power play and the penalty kill and is defensively sound (better than most if not all of the centres in the league in my opinion.)
The next move should be to move Nylander for D. There are some solid D on similar expiring contracts, like Montour or Pesce…or even Devon Teows who is a solid 50pt D at a plus 39
In my opinion I think Treliving stated that it shouldn't be about the core 4 but more so the entire team bc he knows Marner and Matthews can't handle the pressure here so he said that to try to eleviate that pressure so he can get more from them. That said I don't think that was the best move. IDK about you boys but I remember hearing from the greats of the game in the past and even in the now they speak with alot of accountability and maturity when they handle the media dealing with being knocked out of the playoffs. I do not hear the same language from them. Look at the way Yzerman spoke as a player for one example….Many others…. Nylander is a 10 million dollar player. Look at his stats in comparison. But more importantly he is a keeper bc he can handle the pressure here. The guy is very clutch which is an extremely good trait to have man. You don't see that in Marner or Matthews. Not in this market anyway. edit…He is a much better player then AHO..lol
Trade Nylander, letting him walk would be ridiculous. You may not get full market value but you need a top 4D and/or a high pick back. If he won't commit to a workable number then trade him to set the new culture..
I'm sick of Hayes ragging on Matthews that he hasn't taken a max term contract. Ostensibly, Matthews signed a 9 year contract at $12.3M AAV back in 2019. In reality, he just broke that up into two different contracts. Tell me Hayes, if Dubas signs Matthews to 8x$12.3M four years ago, are you happy?
The cap is going to go up unless there is less revenue coming in, i guess what they were saying. I just don't think the economy is going well in the next 18 months. Let's hope that I am wrong, and recession only happen in a short duration.
After the playoffs, The Leafs Executives clearly expressed their commitment to not change their Core 4. So how is it fair to 1) duress Willy this summer right after 1) they told him he was safe as a Leaf Cord 4 guy for a while {basically Leafs Executives were satisfied with one second round playoff game win}, and 2) Willy’s contract doesn’t expire until the end of next year – so why do Leafs Executives not just honour the terms of Leaf Core 4 player contracts? Might Leaf fans not stick up loyally for their Leaf players – under contract like Willy?
And look at poor Auston – 1) he wasn’t just allowed to play out his last contract and maybe experience a playoff run during that contract, and 2) Matthews was under duress when they offered him so much money – as if he is the top player in the NHL? At least Matthews sacrificed for the Leafs by taking all that money – knowing the Leaf Executives next year if the Salary Cap goes up – NHL fans outside of Toronto won’t be surprised if Nylander gets paid nearly $10 Million a year. Next after that – Marner is basically gonna want a salary like Matthews.
Sure is fun following the Leafs Executives and other NHL teams in their playoff runs.
Eight years is a long time for a contract. A lot can happen. As it stands now, Matthews will be a Leaf until he’s 31, having been a Leaf for 12 years by then. That’s fantastic. Will Matthews be a 13Myr player from 32-35? We ‘Lloyd see.
Nylander is coming off a 40 goal season but wants to disregard all the seasons before that number . Evaluate him this last season . See if he’s really worth ten . If so, consider keeping him . If not , trade him at the deadline for picks . If Tyler bertuzzi and domi seem like better value . Keep those two . A playoff team will caught up good value at the trade deadline for Willy
The time to establish a Sidney Crosby or Patrice Bergeron or Steven Stamkos cap limit was after Tavares signed. Tavares had an $11 million cap-hit as a UFA, Matthews should've either come in slightly below or at most tied with Tavares for cap-hit. This would've also made Mitch's contract lower.
But Dubas, the greenhorn that he was, screwed up the Nylander negotiations and allowed him to sit out until December 1st, while still caving to Nylander's demands. Matthews' agent smelled blood in the water and Dubas desperate to avoid another holdout gave him the moon. Mitch and his representatives were only too happy to take the Leafs to task afterwards as well and the rest is history.
It's not Treliving's fault that he's inherited an entitled and greedy core. He's got to do his best to try and get them all at manageable numbers. Matthews new contract in terms of AAV is fair, the term not so much. If Willy is insistent on getting a contract that starts at 10 then Tree has to trade him.
As far as "de-emphasizing" the Core Four is concerned, narratively that's just never going to happen unless and until one of them is moved. Once JT's contract expires and assuming the other three all stay then it will be a Core Three.
On the ice however is where we should hopefully see that de-emphasizing Tree was talking about. Advanced charts came out showing how every playoff teams forwards performed offensively over the past two seasons, and Toronto only had 4 guys who were actually pushing the offense, while other contenders like the Avs, VGK, and Tampa had 6 or 7 guys doing so.
Adding Bertuzzi, Domi, and having a full season of Knies (who was the lone other Leaf to be pushing offense aside from the Core Four) will alleviate some pressure from the core guys and that is most important.
I don't know how you can say "The cap has no flexibility" when the Leafs pop a goaltender on IR who is good to play for the season to free up extra cap space. Makes a mock of the salary cap in all honesty as if the Sens tried to place Matt Murray on IR when he was not injured it would have been a no from the NHL. The Leafs are clearly trying everything to win which I understand, there is no way they are going to be able to sign everyone up for extensions. The only way that you can keep Marner and Nylander is to trade Tavares next off-season and use the $11,000,000 (possibly less with salary retention) to sign Marner and Nylander to longer deals. With Tavares in his last year next season and going into his 34th year it makes sense to trade him at that point and keep 2 younger players in his place. The Leafs are already being allowed a lot of leeway from the NHL, you can't have it all though, and they need to make some tough decisions in the next 12 months.
Matthews is the problem .. because he puts his wallet ahead of the team and during the playoffs he completely disappears. He has proven to be unable to perform in the playoffs, yet carry the team. Currently Nylander is the better player, IF you want to win a cup. He shows up for the playoffs and doesn't shutdown when things get hard. If the Leafs are happy being eliminated in the first and maybe the second round then keep doing the same thing, let Matthews take a huge chunk of the cap room and rely on bargain basement goaltending and a 2nd rate D core.
Saying that it’s on the players to establish an internal cap or to take a discount while also saying it’s the owners that put them here is such a wild take. Not to mention insinuating that what Matthews or Marner were signed for was a mistake? Or that Nylander wouldn’t get a haul on the FA market?! Like holy shit guys, wake up and smell what your stepping in.
There are teams that would pay William Nylander 10 million on the open market. He's their best play off performer along with Reilly. Also the one guy that actually wants to sign a long term deal.
I think trailering is doing really well but something tells me after the gaudreau saga traleving panicked and decided that instead of waiting and getting a cheaper better deal for both sides he saw the contract was there and took it before it was to late but maybe he tried negotiating but either way nobody will ever know
A prime example of why TSN is not #1 in Toronto Sportscastimng hell they are not even #5 , they fail to understand this market and I would love to see some backup to all the OpEd speak
Matthews was already overpaid because of the Tavares contract, now he's even more overpaid and we still have the same team that can't get it done in the playoffs..
Trade Nylander, Liljegren, to Calgary for: Igor and Big Z and Calgarys 2nd round pick. (Flames take on cap space but likely will trade Hanifin and could go the high draft pick route) Leafs shed cap space and are apprx 1 mil off from being compliant , they gain a tougher, more experienced D man that can fill in today and work both sides if needed or move to a second line pairing. Igor plays lw/rw/c and can be a top 6 player giving the rest of the core more urgency to produce with out Ny and gain a younger player who is still promising but should hit at least 50 points. GLG

they already failed establishing a standard with the matthews deal

Trade Morgan Reilly , he is NOT worth 7.5 Mill a Year .
The BIG Question is … How much is the Cap Going Up ??? … Are Teams supposed to Guess ???

Meanwhile Vegas just goes and wins a Cup😂

Look up insecurity in the dictionary………. It will say leaf’s fan.
His next move should be to step down because he is not actually the Gm. Shanny is running the show.
I think Marner more valuable then Mathews

Me thinks they will strip the C from JT and give it to Auston – but Auston not a leader of men, trust me. Will be a worse disaster than currently.

Brad definitely overpaid for matthews a non performer in the playoffs
Tavares is going to be gone soon – don’t do anything stupid
I think trailering is doing really well but something tells me after the gaudreau saga traleving panicked and decided that instead of waiting and getting a cheaper better deal for both sides he saw the contract was there and took it before it was to late but maybe he tried negotiating but either way nobody will ever know

Marner and Nylander scored more points than Matthews last year. Why should they take less?
If willy is firm on the number for example 10 million per year, Tree will look for the best trade but will take his time.
This is the best team I seen scenes the 93 leafs there finally not going to be pushed around this can't wait for NHL to start good job Brad
The Leafs need BIG, TOUGH, D-MAN! It is that simple. GO LEAFS GO!!!!
Treliving looks like Discount AL Bundy.
Trade Nylander asap.
