This comment section is going to be ugly isn’t it

This is…surprising. Thought Tre would see how he did this season and go from there. He must be very well liked within the organization.

  3. DaltonFitz

Not sure he’s earned that to be honest, but it’s not like this guarantees he sticks around if things go south. Whatever.

  4. rsyzygy

They were never going to go into the season with him only having one year left. And MLSE can easily pay two coaches at a time if it comes to it

  5. brunoclement

Yeah this is fine. Its not like we have coaching cap constraints if it doesnt work out. Didnt we just stop payjng babcock lol.

  6. omulls

Keefe won Tre and Shanny over, enough said

  7. Kinglokner16

With no Kerfoot or Holl let’s see how he coaches now

  8. Svalbard38

I’m interested to see Dubasless Keefe’s coaching. That pair were so joined at the hip, I wonder how much of Keefe’s strategy was Dubas’s strategy.

This is either going to age very well or very poorly. What’s done is done so I’m just gonna be optimistic and hope for the best

  10. leafscitypackersfan

Weird how that even as Dubas was let go, things stay the exact same

  11. Ravage1496

Not surprising whatsoever, even if they end up firing him next offseason they weren’t going to let him go into the season with one year left on his contract.

  12. thismadhatter

Mark my words. Dubas was holding Keefe back from showing his true unhinged personality.

  13. ThaFamousGrouse

Meh so what. If it doesn’t work you can him, it’s just money and not against the cap. Nothing to see here.

  14. CTHT07

If you told me Dubas was gone and Keefe got an extension at the beginning of the offseason I’d call you an idiot.

Keefe has gotten outcoached every playoff series. The Leafs fired Babcock with like 4 years left on the deal so that gives me hope if Keefe continues to be stubborn he will be gone as well.

  15. buddyboykoda

I was starting to wonder if what Dubas wanted and what Keefe wanted were different things. If Treliving is confident in giving a multi year extension they must have similar visions.

Keefe didn’t have set lines going jnto the playoffs last year.

Keefes decisions during the playoffs had me raging.

What the fuck is this??? Shanny needs to go.

  17. power_of_funk

    Meh

Dont see why Brad was in a hurry to re-sign him. Could of at least waited to see how the team starts first.

  18. Hit_it_Rowdy

It means nothing. It’s just to avoid the lame duck narrative after every loss. If the team stumbles, he’ll be gone either way. Let’s all calm down.

  19. mitchmarners

Good move. He’s a top-2 coach in every playoff series he coaches in.

  20. SpinningDickTwist

Very curious to see if it was Dubas or Keefe pulling the strings based on what Keefe does this year.

It’s pretty clear Dubas is all about command and control type power at this point so Keefe might actually have different ideas on scratches and line combos

  21. ElephantShell34

Even if you don’t really like him, having him come into the year without an extension would not be ideal.

They can still fire him at any time.

  22. H8ersAlwaysH8

This means nothing tbh. Dude could be fired tomorrow.

  23. BobbyCrispyGuitar

I’m a little biased towards Keefe since he played for my Bramalea Blues in the 1990’s, lol. I think he’s a great coach and deserves another two years behind the Leafs bench.

  24. dirtybird131

Good, Nothing worse than a lame duck coach

  25. JonJonFTW

This doesn’t change anything, in my opinion. Leaving Keefe unextended would’ve been a headache at every single post-game press conference, same as leaving Matthews unextended. We’re not like other teams where we will be hesitant to fire a coach simply because we’re still paying the contract of the last guy.

Babcock is only just now coming off the books. MLSE is used to paying two coaches at once. The board will not stop Tre from firing Keefe if that’s what he wants to do. Saying we still have the last guy’s coach is one of the first things a GM can do to deflect blame if a team underperforms under their watch. Whether Tre legitimately believes in Keefe, this extension was always going to happen because of Tre’s own self-preservation.
