I feel like this signing is purely a moral boost. Leafs can afford to pay a fired coach now that Babcock isn't costing them as much. But man he's gotta work on the 1 on 1 coaching battles. He's got a great general coaching routine but was picked apart by the lightning and Florida. I still can't believe the Leafs beat Tampa without being able to cleanly break out of their D zone.
Keefe didn't have Domi, Bertuzzi, and Reeves last year. But THIS year NO ONE is going to take liberties against Matthews, Marner, Taverus. Keefe DESERVES this extension and HE has the players NOW to get the job done in the playoffs! Go Leafs Go !!!
Out coached by Maurice (one time Leafs head man) there goalie Bob was all world ! What Dubas did was give out big money contracts to talented players but got so so goalies (mrazek).

The coaches job in part is to get players who don't have fight in them to fight. keefe, not only failed at that but didn't realise that's the task at hand.
Leafs have the cash… if Keefe fails in play offs he will be gone with a pay off…if he doesnt do well before Xmas he will be gone..this is win win for us…. now have him for 3 seasons IF he can get improvements made at play off time ? We have a great coach signed up for another 2 seasons…if not ? He is gone for a financial pay out.
Keefe has had his ass handed to him in every NHL playoff series he ever coached in. This is…. disappointing. I can't wait to see him roll out the same playoff lines that have failed every year and look shocked when they fail again.
On the one hand I get it. Because I look at the crop of coaches that might be on the market and it's abysmal. He should've been fired when Trotz or even when Cassidy were on the market but now there's no one good left.
The axiom in the NHL is a coach in the last year of a contract is often perceived as 'lame duck' coach. The view being, that somehow that situation diminishes his infuence and/or respect amongst his players. Personally I think it's bullshit. Perhaps, Treliving having had close interactions with Keefe & having decided he is the best choice at this moment to be Leaf head coach, thinks there is value to having no 'lame duck' label going into this season. I agree. No pointless distraction & if things go poorly, the Leafs are wealthy enough to absorb a dismissal & it would be way less expensive than the cost of firing the insufferable ass-wipe Badcock. 166-71-30 is Keefe's record since taking over. Outstanding. No issues for me.
Having Keefe coach without a deal is a major distraction. The Leafs can send him to lupul land if it doesn't work out
My question to you Andrew is at what point do we blame the players they make lots of money and underperformed.
The reason this deal done is one its one less distraction for the team.

Very smart move by Brad as this takes the pressure off him for a few years and keeps it on Dubas's guy.
Sheldon can say all the right things to this squad and you'll still get the same response. Sheldon can't play for the players at the end of the day, all he can do is use his words. I feel it's more of mental weakness with the players than it is a problem with coaching
Keefe was outcoached not just by Maurice but I think also by Jon Cooper in the first round imo. John Tavares just randomly remembered he was captain and it was his team and threw the puck on net for a lucky bounce. Don't get me wrong, I love Sheldon Keefe..I mean his record speaks for itself. He just had a problem last year of playing certain guys win or lose and refused to switch it up sometimes. He also is a really nice guy..too nice and that just don't cut it sometimes. This group needs a coach who yells and says a few swear words when they play like shit if ya'll know what I mean. No nonsense bit of a hardass, old school coach to get these guys motivated each and every night. If he can become that guy, then yes he's our guy especially when you look at his record and the overall team defense with him behind the bench.

Sorry Keefe is a non factore just like Babs was. When you have a team full of superstars, they dont need to be motivated or coached to play hard and win.
Ask Crosby, McKinnon, McDavid, ect if they need to listen to a coach to excel in there effort and drive in any game.
This core has shown 8 years straight that they dont care to win. There hasn't been any progression .
Before everyone says they eliminated Tampa.
Lets be honest here, Vasy eliminated Tampa. If Vasy was Vasy of two years ago. Leafs get eliminated in 5 and more drastic changes would have been done by now. Much needed changes.
The core 4 disappear for most of the playoffs, they dont hit, they dont stand up for themselves or teammates, they dont hussle.
Sorry leafs not getting past second round again. Keefe will not make it to his extention. Its just a golden parachute.
No GM, coach, or complementary players will change this team till the core 4 desides to change.

Glaring weakness in the blue line .. the pressure the panthers put on the leafs defense in the second round last year really exposed them.. regular season yeah it’ll get them by, but come playoff time it’ll be the same old same old (unless they address this BIG issue.
The time to get a new coach was this summer, so signing Keefe now was the right call. I dont believe in keeping distracting situations on the team. They can still get a new coach next summer
I think Sheldon coming back may have had something to do with AM34’s extension. I like Sheldon, I think he’s done a great job behind the bench.
