Short answer: because it saves the Leafs cap space. Because the Cap will soon be going up tremendously (maybe $10+ million in 3 years), adding more years to his contract would actually cost more than having fewer years. The Leafs are actually paying him less money on the new contract than he had asked for in an 8-year deal when they negotiated his current expiring contract.
We have gotten home for 12 years…not sure the issue here. So many of these look bad at the end. This is a win win. Leafs him down during his prime years and can move on if his game regresses.
In 5 years, we will be complaining about him being slow, having a high contract etc…if it were 8 years, everyone would be complaining about trading him, getting his salary off the books, etc. Toronto media and some fans are so dumb that they eat crayons for lunch.
There the guys who said matthews is going somewhere else then when he signs for another five years they want eight don't worry guys it means now you can start saying matthews is not signing with the leafs in four years right back to where you started I'm sure you will be happy
It is kind of sad that we look at a player contract and hope that they would take less but Salary Cap does that.
Matthews has shown that he wants the max amount of money in his career and some people were saying that this is good because Matthews won't be making that 13.25M when he is 32-35 and that is true he will take a new contract before that last season of this extension and that will be 8y long and it will make him again one of highest cap hits in the NHL and most likely somewhere between 14-15M
Because according to you guys in TRONO you believe you are the macca of everything including hockey so the players take the money have a great season then run .
This is bullshit. As a leaf fan, this is a great contract. I do don’t want him to sign for 8 years. Less risk and more options for the club in 4-5 years.
You have a superstar signed until he’s 31. Stop bitching.
Lmao I hate the leafs but these 2 guys are Wrong!!! Matthews has given you 7 years already and this last year on his deal will be his eighth season… it’s literally no different from Caufield taking 8 years at 22 years old and finishing that deal at 30 years old lmao Matthews will be 30-31 i believe after this deal he just signed…. I definitely understand fans saying “well it would have been nice if Matthews helped Toronto and just signed his contract for 8 years after his ELC cause we would still have him for 4 more years at 11 million instead of 13.25 million” I definitely get that and it would have helped the team but the players in Toronto are those types of guys they like money more then helping the team, but at the same time they have been loyal and have given you leaf fans a good amount of years of their careers and Marner and Matthews will most likely be Toronto Maple Leafs until they are 31 years of age and past their elite prime years and maybe those 2 will be leafs until they retire…. If Matthews and Marner leave at least you guys got them for 8-10 years of their careers that’s not bad.
Imagine if the 4 Top guys of a team would say : "10 years of 8 million each is enough money for us. That way we can bring in 2 to 3 more top guys to play with us."
My fan heart says sign for 8 years and for millions less. This is a business and players know what they're worth and are looking for that next big contract. Can't blame the guy for wanting to get paid.
contract length and amount is perfect, sign for 8 and in 6 you will be bitching about "why did we sign an 8 year contract" Stop the madness , it is NOT your money so who cares.
"Why do they have to middle it so they can be the richest guy" – It's almost like the Leafs are the richest organization in the league and players know that.
Why not just be HAPPY that he signed an extension…?? And Matthews is going to play another FIVE more seasons in Toronto, is that still not satisfactory enough….? Maybe it puts more urgency on the Leafs to WIN in the next 5 years, ever stop to think about that? No, of course you didn't. Leaf podcasters as always making a big stink about everything that's supposed to be a positive but always have to spin it into a negative….like y'all have been doing ever since you STARTED podcasting in the 1st place. Sheesh.

Hoes ain't cheap my guy

Give it up

I think Leaf fans are happy to have him regardless only media types are the ones panicking and worrying lol nice try.
4 or 8 Years with no Stanley Cup, who cares?

The cap is going up it’s not the same as when Mcdavid or McKinnon signed their contracts. This type of stuff is why ppl chose to play elsewhere.

But don’t worry, McDaveo wants out in Edmonton to come back home to Toronto lmao
The blame for all this can b e laid squarely at the feet of Dubas.
Bad takes…….why did sportsnet pick these guys up!?
This is why players are disliking canadian markets because the tax and the reporters are relentless. Be happy sportsnet.

These podcast clowns know nothing.

Be happy you aren’t stuck with this guy for 8 yrs sucking the coffer dry trust me ‼️👍🏻
I'm sure most players in the next couple years are going to do the exact same thing knowing the cap is finally going up.
I actually like the contract. The Guy has done nothing in the playoffs. So in the next 2 years if the same result over n over see you later mathews.
Imagine if the 4 Top guys of a team would say : "10 years of 8 million each is enough money for us. That way we can bring in 2 to 3 more top guys to play with us."
I wish Tavares only signed for 4 years. If Matthews goes cold or gets injured we will be happy. Leafs media is so good at turning everything negative

Because Toronto isn’t a first class place to live anymore. Though having a few mill may make it easier 😅. Suck it up Thews.
Never compare yourself (teams deal) to others 😅. Everyone (team) is different.

half a decade = "couple of years"

F these guys complaining that the dude stayed it’s today not three or four years from now why have the what if he leaves convo now.
44 points in 50 playoff games for an American whose already peaked. Leafs aren’t winning a cup with him and he’s over payed
Lots of long contracts don't age well due to injuries or decline. I think half a decade is just about perfect.
