Call me crazy but I’m fine with keeping Price a Hab for his whole career even if only on paper

Aren’t we technically over the cap right now? I know Price’s contract will keep us under when it goes back on LTIR, but we’re still running three goalies and just took on a bunch of dead cap by retaining on Petry and Edmundson. Doesn’t seem like we’re doing all that great a job protecting our cap space honestly.

I’m also not really sure who they expect us to sign next off-season. Stamkos and Guentzel aren’t going anywhere, and with Matthews re-signing, it looks like Toronto is going to keep it’s core together. After that, the talent drops off steeply.

Why so hesitant to actually just call this shit what it is? This is a rebuild, the fans are behind it because it needs to happen and a lot of things have slid to the wayside while previous management kicked the ball down the field over and over, applying bandaids to deep and glaring holes. « Call it what you want », I really wish we could. If Kent Hughes says the word rebuild, will Molson come riding out shirtless on a horse and decapitate him with a long sword? I love the history and even the prestige of this beautiful team/club, but sometimes it really feels like our own pride in a matter such as this prevents us from being upfront and honest during our « short turn around period filled with progressive changes » or whatever tf we are supposed to tip-toe around calling this rebuild.

We have A LOT of projected cap space going into next year. Were actually in a position to go after players for once via FA or trade. Great feeling. Worth noting Gorton signed Panarin when the Rangers we’re still rebuilding, so there is history of that with this mgmt team.

I also get why they don’t want to call it a rebuild, it’s not like we started from scratch, we already had a solid young core and if they take a step this year or next year we won’t be in a « rebuilding » mode whether we like it or not.

I feel like we’re going to make a run for Pettersson when he’s an FA and prob wants out of Vancouver, but that’s just a thought

I think it makes financial sense for the Habs to save even if they’re not making a run at a big fish yet.

Let’s say the Monahan scenario doesn’t happen again. Well, Molson still reins in the expenses while the Habs are in a rebuild. Therefore, not expected to be in the playoffs (and generating that sweet, sweet, extra money).

When we’re ready to take a step, bust a move.
