    No retained salary, kinda surprised

  2. LeVorv

This is actually…. not too bad? I wasn’t confident with martin as our backup

  3. AppealToReason16

I guess this answers the question of how much faith they have in Spencer Martin.

  4. Iginlas_4head_Crease

Great trade. Under the cap and picked up an actual NHL backup

  5. aneilm

DeSmith could actually be an okay backup if Silovs isn’t ready off the rip. No retained salary and not losing a second rounder means a W in my opinion.

  6. DisplacedNovaScotian

Ha. That’s not bad, actually. Smith can be a decent #2 for us. ~~The downside is he has one year more in term than Pearson~~. But overall, this is better than I expected.

    E. Smith, like Pearson, is entering his last year. My mistake.

  7. NEBC14

If it was Benning we would have retained 20% and sent a 2nd instead. This is a win.

Don’t hate it. We get a proper backup and partly clear our winger logjam. Get rid of a load of risk around Pearsons form after he missed so much time due to injury. Never a fan of giving up a third, but that’s the current market

  9. NinCross

I’m too lazy to do the math, but DeSmith’s cap hit was about $1.8m so it looks like the Canucks barely shedded enough cap to be cap compliant. I want to know by how much, though.

  10. Standingbutsitting

Having a legit backup probably helps the teams stability and makes sure Demmer can actually have a night off

  11. Nuck_1198

Name a better duo than Jim Rutherford and trading Tanner Pearson lmao.

  12. gangstarapmademe

I’m beginning to fall for Alvin. If he can sign Petty to under 9m I will kiss him

  13. Buffalorocks1

This is a huge W you get rid of a guy in Pearson who we moved past lets be honest and you get yourselves a good backup goalie on the cheap to give demko some games off and you save money at the cost of a 2025 3rd well done

  14. 4skinmikehunt

    Better back up then Martin

  15. neilrp

I’m a fan. The fancy stats people (and me) love Casey DeSmith. Seems like a great 1B option to take a load off of Demko. Not sure what we’re going to do with Martin, Tolopilo, Silovs, and Sawchenko.

  16. mghtymrv

That’s a tidy piece of business.

Gets us a solid backup, sheds cap, and let’s Pearson play where he can have a fresh start. The third pick is also in 2025 (and we better be good-ish by then). Well done!

  17. MacBeef

Well shit, that’s not a bad move.

  18. accountnumber02

Nitpicky sad that we lost another asset we could’ve traded for immediate help next year when we hopefully were better, but trade is pretty alright objectively. They didn’t expect pearson to be ready, wish we could move beauvillier for a mid pick instead but seems teams are still too cap strapped so can’t complain.

  19. Nucksfan23

    Not bad tbh

I was cheering for a Pearson bounce back season, hope he does well in Montreal

  20. Strict-Caterpillar38

We probably shouldn’t be in this situation year after year, but this isn’t bad.

  21. Bubbiesacat

Montreal probably flips Pearson at the deadline too!

  22. NerdPunch

This is actually really solid work for Van.

Shored up a position of organizational weakness (legit veteran backup goalie). They traded from a position of strength (winger).

And they cleared up enough cap-space they should be able to be involved in the waiver wire.

  23. Fullprice47

So Montreal could flip Pearson at the deadline for another 3rd round pick

  24. TimsAFK

I hope Pearson had some input on this, I feel like the organization owes him that much after completely mishandling his injury.

DeSmith as a back up gives me more confidence than Martin or Silovs, decent trade

Good luck Tanner, we’ll always have the plant my wife named after you <3

  25. Jupiter_101

This is the reverse of what we were all fearing lol. DeSmith gets a new home which is good for him though I wonder if that means they have zero confidence in Martin. Alternatively DeSmith now gets packaged as a « sweetener » to rid them of Garland or Myers.

  26. bwoah07_gp2

    That’s a pretty good move.

  27. JTMilleriswortha1st

W trade good to get a backup and good to clear some money up. Pearson is the most whatever canucks player i’ve ever seen. Not terrible but not very good at the same time

  28. JTMilleriswortha1st

Actually so funny how awful Jim Benning was as a GM.

    Pearson signing
    OEL trade
    Dickinson trade/signing
    all the terrible draft picks

Glad to see Allvin is better

  29. _HoochieMama

Nice! I mean fuck Desmith but otherwise a smart trade.

  30. Suboobiz

When was the last time we acquired a draft pick in one of these deals. Always us throwing in the sweeter.

    DeSmith a questionable character too.

    Do not like

  31. maskedkiller215

Canucks fans last year: “See! I told you this would happen!”

JR: “It was never a matter of if. Only when.”

  32. Shironye

I like this. Demko, DeSmith, and Silovs is a solid trio, and although we had to give up another pick, it was only a 3rd, and it gives us enough cap space to be compliant with Podz and Hogz. And now we’re not forced to move guys like Myers or Garland, which will likely cost a lot more than a 3rd.

  33. smcfarlane

Love this. Goalie depth. Moving a contract. Yes.

  34. EpicRussia

Pearson lawsuit incoming after how Canucks medical team handled his injury?

I dont know much about DeSmith so can’t really comment in it except to say we desperately need more NHL-ready goalies after last year.

Are we officially under the cap now (with Poolman on LTIR)?

  35. theEMPTYlife

It’s crazy how much less painful a third is compared to a second. Great trade, killed two birds with one stone

  36. Wazzy8

I’m shocked they actually moved the right player and the trade itself was good. I wasn’t a fan of Pearson’s game but I hope things go well with his new team.

  37. jdmay101

After messing around a bit with Capfriendly, the most cap-heavy roster that is remotely conceivably possible has Di Giuseppe in the AHL with Raty, McDonough and Podkolzin all on the NHL roster, along with Hirose at 3rd pairing LD and Cole McWard as the 7th defenseman. So 14F 7D 2G. That comes out to $31,666 in cap space.

Obviously it’s likely there will be at least some further roster moves before opening day, but this shows that no matter who they end up going with based on who is currently on the team, this roster is now under the cap.

(Note: you could get over the cap by demoting Dakota Joshua in favour of Nils Aman, but that just seems incredibly unlikely)

  38. ImAnAfricanCanuck

As a person, I do not like Casey DeSmith, as he has done some vile things, but through the « on ice results » lenses I see this as a good move.

It’s only a matter of time before this market chews him up for his past.

  39. Proudly-Canadian

Isn’t this guy a woman beater?

  40. KrebsCollector

Great trade imo. Very happy we lost cap, and got a reliable backup goalie
