[Batchelor] Elias Pettersson à propos de l’état de son contrat : « Ce n’est pas une distraction. Vous en faites une distraction. Il me reste encore un an. Je suis heureux maintenant, mais je veux juste me concentrer sur la saison, mes coéquipiers et juste Je reviendrai avec un bon départ avec l’équipe. »

The media after reading that whole sentence: « he said he has only 1 more year left! PANIK! »

  2. NinCross

The real reason why Petey didn’t need captaincy was so he can continue to make S-tier spicy comments like this to Canucks media.

  3. Serenity_Now_09

That’s Swedish for “STFU and leave me TF alone”.

Pettersson will get tired of the constant questioning and say” fuck it, I’m out”. Could you blame him?

Pettersson has said that he’s going to wait until the end of the season to discuss his contract. He wants to focus on the season. So why does media think he’ll change his tune. It’s moronic!

  4. ihaveyuidonttouchme

Oh, what do you mean, « leave you alone »? He’s the most crucial piece in the Canucks’ lineup (that has not signed 8yr long term), and of course, we should totally panic before it’s too late again. Like, obviously. 🙄/s

His reply was a little much in my opinion but also consistent with his handling of questions he isn’t comfortable with. This interview is a perfect example of why he also couldn’t be captain or at least would struggle with the role. Rather than stay level headed in scrums he does often come across as combative. Love Petey the player but Canucks made the right call with Hughes as captain.

Haha I love that petey has the tone of a significant other that’s fallen out of love with you being asked to discuss future plans they have no intention on following through with . or like a kid at an end of school year review with the teacher being asked to stay behind for 10 minutes after every one else has been left out for summer

I wonder if Pettersson understands how ugly this could get for him, Canucks fans can treat you like a King but they can also turn on you very quickly. I would worry for him if things go south, he could get booed.

In before toxic media starts crying about « we’re just doing our jobs »

Guy could’ve paved the way to focus on the season by…signing a contract, or at least signalling his willingness to stay in Vancouver long-term. It’s not hard to toss out a * »I really like it here in Vancouver, and I’m confident something will get done eventually »* as a restricted free agent unless that isn’t necessarily what you want.

Like it or not, he’s fuelled this speculation by not publicly committing to the team, unlike some other high-profile RFAs (Stutzle, Sanderson) who repeatedly stressed that they wanted to get a contract done throughout negotiations or signed a deal at the earliest opportunity (Matthews).

He has good reason to want to keep his options open, but he has to have known that questions about his contract were coming from miles away. Let’s not pretend there’s been some one-way media onslaught against Petey, he’s been adored here since he stepped foot in this city.

  10. He won’t sign now for a number of reasons. It’s hard to stay focused on the game when being distracted with legal stuff. He’s got one more year under contract, and another year after that as RFA. He could be betting on himself to meet or beat his last season’s stats, and net a larger payday. He could also be waiting to see what progress the team has made overall as he’s clearly stated he wants to win. If the team doesn’t make a meaningful step in the right direction, it doesn’t necessarily mean he will be gone, but it may require the Canucks to pay him a bit more to stay – When also factoring he may play better this season vs last. Swedes are typically more honorable than American players in that I can’t see him pulling a Gaudreau or Tkachuk and leaving abruptly without giving the Canucks a chance to counter or obtain picks/prospects/high-caliber players in return. I also think the lack of a contract being signed by now also has to do with his Agent informing him on all the tangibles and advising him to wait it out. Mainly because said agent is betting on Petey doing better this season and will gain a larger payday himself. It’s also more time for Canucks Management to potentially shed more bad contracts and open up more cap space to pay more.

If Petey has another season like the last, his value is/shouldn’t be worth any less than 12 million per season, with term length to be determined.

  11. g0kartmozart

The media does what the fans will click on, and the fans are distracted by Petey’s contract status.

Petey saying it’s not a distraction is great, but it doesn’t make it true.

  12. xJudgernauTx

Good. Now please, can the media stop asking him about it so he can have a good camp.

  13. BulwarkNuck

Am I an idiot or does his RFA status render this contract talk nonsense moot since the chances of someone offer sheeting are slim at best and the odds of Canucks not matching even slimmer? Isn’t it obvious that he’s betting on himself because currently the club shouldn’t be paying him for his one career high season so he needs another 100 pts season to get paid, or alternatively he’ll be forced to sign a short term contract?

Is this the Twilight Zone? Am I going crazy? Is he actually shopping for clubs on a RFA?

  14. Knight_On_Fire

No truer words have been said. The media guys need to fill hours of content and they don’t have much of an imagination to fill those hours outside of making mountains out of molehills. And there’s not even much of a molehill to build around in the case of Pettersson. Turn off the radio or podcast when they bring up the subject because if they can sell it they’ll shovel it down our throats for literally years.

  15. AverageMaleAged18-24

It’s not a distraction. The guy at the store said I’m the only guy he’s ever seen pull it off.

  16. GoCanucksGo604

Why is nobody mentioning one of the main reasons is the cap going up next year? :/

They just doing business, the speculation is just annoying.

  17. Only-Nature7410

    We are so soft.
I thought he said it right.

  18. mudermarshmallows

Eh, not really a fan of this type of response.

  19. eexxiitt

If we can’t compete he GONEEEEEEEEEE and we’re going to enter the rebuild that fans so desperately wanted.

  20. Ah yes the media pissing off the players… sigh

  21. WideEast9601

“I’ve got one more year” – he is so gone. He’s always hated the media here. He can’t wait to go to Florida or something.
