So this guy thinks Pettersson is bad in the defensive end?

So first of all, Craig Button doesn’t even know what city he’s in at this point and should definitely not be asked for his analysis.

Second, it’s not wrong to say that structure was a big problem that Tocchet is trying to solve – whether he can or not – but replacing 3 defensemen is half your blue line. Of course that’s going to make a big difference to how the blue line plays. It’s potentially 4, given that Akito Hirose or Christian Wolanin could very well start on the third pair and they only played 23 games last year combined, or even 5 if you count the fact that Matt Irwin could end up being the 7th D.

Is different better in this case? Unclear. But that’s definitely the biggest change.

The defense is more solid but there’s still very little breakout or passing skill there, which is going to limit our transition. I still forsee getting hemmed in our own end by better teams frequently. Our forwards being generally small and meh along the boards is going to make in-zone defence a problem again.

So yes, systems will help, but at the end of the day you need good players and we don’t have enough to compete with the best, so wildcard hopes seem appropriate.

I agree with Johnson. It felt like the team would rack up points for the first two periods and after that was done they’d let the opponent back into the game. Then the opponent got to pad their stats too. I think we’ll know within the first ten games if it’s still a country club mentality.

Hopefully not, but I don’t think these additions really make the difference needed to make things better for the blue line in Vancouver. Outside of Quinn Hughes I still have concerns about the ability of this blue line being about to get the puck out of the defensive zone quickly and I still have worries that this blue line may struggle against the better teams in the NHL. You can have all the systems you want, but you also need talented players, and outside of Quinn Hughes, I don’t think this blue line has the talent needed.

Wasnt our #1 d line two years ago on opening night Myers and OEL? Things are trending in a better direction at least

Probably…it’s improved but still not good. More importantly they’re one injury away from Casey Desmith or Silovs being the starter behind a below average defense. That’s a horrific combo.

Asks penguins fans what they think of desmith.
