The Canucks had very good defense but Holy shit, I didn't expect that game from Oilers. The defense from them were horrid tonight. Hopefully it was just first game jitters. 🤞🤞
This game was ugly right from the get-go. I'd start the third stringer in net for the next game if they had one. Each goalie gave up 4 goals, Boeser gets 4 goals alone, Vancouver's power play was dialed in, and Holloway might be out for the next couple games with a wrist injury following that blocked shot. The only silver lining was that the Oilers were on the road. If they lost like this in Edmonton, I would have expected a couple jerseys thrown onto the ice. This is the type of game we would expect from a rebuilding team or a team near the bottom of the league, not from a team that is a playoff contender.
Woodcroft could have gone one of two ways following the end of this game. He could have yelled at the players and called some of them out. Or he could have just walked in and said "forget about tonight, guys. It was an embarrassing performance, but better now than towards the end of the season when we're pushing for the division title. We won't even look at the tape, and just go on to the next game". Lot of things to clean up during their next practice. Better defensive structures, better goaltending, disciplined mindset, and whatever else. But even the best teams have nights like this every now and then. Friday the 13th just came a couple days early for them.
I had set the PVR so when I got home at midnight (fan from the 519!) and when I turned on the tv the “game” was on so I thought well at least there’s 81 more games
This isn't on Campbell at all!! Lack of effort. Defence was awfull. Again same mistakes from the same people, can teach an old dog new tricks…need Ekholm back asap amd another top 4D….firs game of the season but boy was this sooo bad from defemce.
It's Heartbreaking to watch this team tonight struggle defensively, It's Game 1 sure but my god I hated watching Vancouver beat our asses with no effort to handle the puck. If they don't win Saturday it's gonna get concerning down the line if Holland can't figure this out, It's WIN NOW for this team, SO WAKE UP OILERS, GET YOUR GAME TOGETHER FOR SATURDAY, AND BEAT VANCOUVER'S ASS. Patrick as a fan that sees it all & media – it becomes a responsibility to tell the truth. There are a bunch of Dmen that follow the puck, watch the puck from just behind… but don't understand that they have to DEFEND the man in front ! Let the goalie get bouncing pucks… job is to skate.. close gap.. be close & inFront /interfere w the man in front/shooter in net front. Watch BOUCHARD – (Kulak, Nurse etc) has been years of this – drift off & happy to be BEHIND the scoring threat. I don't think the Coach or GM are even telling the players they need to close the gap/ interfere w the hi danger shooter -not the puck. They will likely win some games & play better as you say – but we need to be more honest of the individuals that are slacking – & coach – or will all just 'hide/propped up by McD scoring/passing'…. & stop hiding Bouch.. expecting that Ekh can cover for him – he demand >$4mil (when could have traded).

Bouchard showed prior to Ekholm being acquired his game was pure struggle. Tonight was no different. Thankfully he has a role on toppower play to mask his game. He'll get points but he wont suppress goals against. We need to go back too ceci and nurse and ek an Bouchard to have half a chance at five on five.
I was unable to watch or listen to the game. Sorry folks, had a medical procedure early Thursday AM and have to look "less dead" to the people giving it to me than I would if I did watch or listen. Everything I caught after the fact and just looking at the stats this was not a great game (and that is like calling Noah's flood a bit of moisture). Consider this a wake up call to all. Oilers PP sucked. Canucks were 50% on the PP. Boesser was a beast this game and Demko played 48 minutes and let in one during that. DeSmith came in and saved all 5 of the shots he saw in 11 Minutes so he's doing great too. Soup and Stu were NOT doing well this game. Both with .750 Save %ages and that won't cut it folks. I'm not a panic at the first sign of an issue person, it's the first game and they didn't have a full lineup. We'll see what we see next game and onward.
Important Note: I can't find a site that lists Power Play Time on Ice or PK Time on Ice so those stats regretfully go byebye for now. If things change I'll add them back.
Hollands dumpster diving technique to improve the team was clearly on display. The defence looked absolutely incompetent. I realize it was game 1 but to get obliterated by a team that it touted to not even make the playoffs speaks volumes of how lame their management decisions are.
This is probably going to be the norm for the first 10 games. Commitment to their new system seemed tepid at best. Ekholm is the only one that knows that system. He’ll be relied on bigger this year for that reason. Broberg did well, but he still tends toward man to man defence but his skating skills save him often. Nurse is the same, saved himself a few times due to his skating, but his overall performance was weaker. Vinny the biggest beneficiary of the new system did very well, mostly covered the slot, did well around the net, tried some breakout passes that didn’t work out, but still he’s trying to get those last pieces in place to become a better dman. To be honest I’ve wondered why Nurse and Vinny haven’t been paired together. They would offset each other’s weaknesses better. Same with Broberg should be with Ceci imo

As a Canucks fan I'd say everything went the Canucks way in this game. The Canucks haven't had a Cinderella game like this in 3-4 years. It was overdue. The Oilers didn't play as bad as the score made it look

It seems that we give the puck up over and over. You can’t score when you hand the puck over to the other team. Had that problem last year
