Oh god, Fantilli looks like he’s got a 1000 yard stare in this interview. He saw that powerplay up close…that will scar a man, I don’t care who you are.

  2. caffeinated_skeleton

The good news is Macklin Celebrini is supposed to be pretty filthy.

Poor Fantilli. Dude’s such a gamer he is more worried about the loss than enjoying his NHL debut on his birthday. A pretty decent NHL debut at that, I thought Fantilli was one of our better players tonight

  4. boozerbot69

Kuraly was zooming. Elvis looked much better. Missing kent tonight for sure. Emil did nothing again. I saw flashes of brilliance in Laine centering. Poopy PP.

  5. HootzHootzBoy

Not a good start for the season. Hoping a lot more from the big boys going forward (especially from Johnny and Patty). Merzlikins and Bean were excellent.

Elvis was great, feel bad for the guy and I’m one of his biggest critics. Tex, Marchenko, Bean all played well for me. Fantilli first point. Some positives.

But a lot of negatives obviously. Defensively bad. Provorov was bad. Gaudreau, Jenner, Laine for looong stretches all looked nonexistent at times. Werenski injury… Unlucky man.

Powerplay was horrible, horrible, horrible. Looked clueless once again. Drop passing was terrible. Turnovers a problem again and puck handling looks awful.

Worst of all, this wasn’t a good team. Flyers are projected to be with us in the basement of the Metropolitan. This is who we’ve gotta be beating consistently if we wanna have a prayer at a wildcard (which at this point seems like it’s impossible.

Not enough to go into full-blown panic mode but the issue is that this wasn’t a good team. We’re playing the Rangers two days from now and they’re a playoff team. A bad start is so difficult to dig yourself out of in the NHL, we saw that last year. A few losses in a row and it won’t be a surprise if this team spirals.

Philly plays like Torts. They are aggressive with a bad attitude. We didn’t match the Flyers’ intensity. There were things to like on our side. Bean played great, Tex and Fantilli were good as well. Silli was a mixed bag. He looked good in the first period with the near miss, but the rest of the game it was turnover city. Elvis still likes to throw his stick at inopportune times, but overall, he was OK. He did not get pouty after got scored on, and that’s serious progress. Lastly, I would be in favor of a Constitutional Amendment banning the drop pass. It is a passive play that we don’t do particularly well and is only used to placate those who hate dump and chase. Alas, we never did that particularly well either.

Boy, that looked an awful lot like last year. Soft on the boards. Too cute with the puck leading to bad turnovers. Over passing and poor passing. Careless turnovers in both ends. An anemic power play negated by taking penalties. Opponents left alone in the slot. An inability to bury the chances when they do have them. Elvis flailing widely at times and losing his stick repeatedly. Peake falling down.

And the best players were NOT the best players. Laine still puck-handles into danger and turns the puck over way too often. Gaudreau was a complete non-factor.

I know, I know….it’s one game. But gosh, I just didn’t see any real improvement in the areas that killed them last year. And that’s disappointing.

Elvis at least looked respectable. I’d still like to see him make the save on the Couturier shot glove-side, but we certainly can’t pin this loss on him.

On to the next one. Go get them, boys!

  9. Independent_Context4

why didn’t the team retaliate after the dirty hit? I don’t understand.

  10. tina_specials

We match up terribly with the flyers for what it’s worth. Still frustrating tho

  11. warlink05

    This game was a « I’m not mad. I’m just disappointed. »

Not surprised that the power play hasn’t changed from last season…

  12. RedditShhhmeddit

Why am I already so deflated after just one loss smh

  13. paulskiwrites

Got to admit I haven’t had the chance to listen to a lot of Pascal Vincent since he became head coach but man he killed that press conference. I am rooting for him. Looks intense and earnest and speaks well about the game

  14. Bradlaw798

Elvis made some great saves, Jake Bean game MVP, Zach not dead, Fantilli point…all good things

  15. Ralphcox69

The response after werenskis injury was pathetic and it happens too much with this team. You think Vegas or Tampa would’ve accepted that? Hell no

  16. Fabresque_

I think Vincent hit the nail on the head. The passing was good, execution was not.

He also looked upset and angry at that result, which should be obvious but I think it’s clearly a good thing if he’s not brushing it aside as “oh well first game onto the next one”.

I wanna like him so bad, so a lot of our issues today I’ll chalk it up to Larsen muscle memory.

  17. tailford07

Did a single player even try to make Garnet Hathaway answer for injuring Zach Werenski? Pathetic support for a star player.

  18. Seattlekrakenlegend

    Elvis was straight up 🔥tonight.

I’d be happy to not see Roslovic again.

  19. mamaspastaandbrew

My thoughts from the 9th fucking floor of the Marconi garage

    – Elvis looked good. Thought the second goal looked soft, but I was in the C-deck so didn’t get a great look at it. Played great otherwise.

    – Was really impressed with Texier. One of the few with lots of energy.

    – The 1st line spent way too much time in the defensive zone.

    – Pathetic lack of energy in the stadium for an opening night. Team didn’t provide much to get excited about, but still seemed exceptionally lackluster crowd.

    – Never ever park in the Marconi garage.

  20. Ms_Irish_muscle

Listen, everybody here should know that Elvis had a .943 night, and that’s pretty fucking awesome if you ask me, great start for him. I love that number.

  21. Seattlekrakenlegend

To the comments melting down — looks like a lot of them are deleted, but the point stands

Connor McJesus, and the predicted winner of the cup team this year – lost 8-1 last night against a goalie that vomited in his mask. Calm the fuck down.

  22. HermanBonJovi

Didn’t look great, but it’s game 1. Gonna stay optimistic for a bit longer at least.

  23. jonnys62

Provorov and Peeke were outright liabilities tonight. At least Peeke got physical after he fell on his ass to give up that 2 on 0, salvaged his game somewhat, but jfc they both let Elvis down.

  24. iamelloyello

Roslovic often has a puzzled look on his face, and you know it’s because he’s also wondering how he is still not in the minors.

  25. Tucker897

It’s one game of 82 let’s see how things go for a while before we start calling for heads to roll. I say about a month. At least. One thing of note just fix the damn PP please it’s been too long.

  26. Seattlekrakenlegend

Philly did this to us last year too. The games that Bean and Z got injured in were against Philly.

Part of me wonders if that’s a little bit why Boqy and Johnson were healthy scratches. Sure it’s an effort thing too, but they were almost trying to injure Zach it seemed

  27. brunus76

As much as I say I don’t miss Torts-style hockey, the Flyers tonight were physical and opportunistic and we were…not. At no point did we look capable of holding onto the puck long enough to be a genuine offensive threat.

  28. Archangel612

I think it’s a little early for the gloom and doom. There were positives in that game, but you had to look for them. Elvis looked great despite the team not doing much to help him out. Patty, Marchenko and Tex looked pretty good, but everybody looked a little lost in the system. The Flyers played like a Torts team coming out of the offseason, well conditioned and not demoralized yet by the tank. It was frustrating to watch but I don’t think we should be worried yet. Also fuck Garnet Hathaway.

  29. Just got home from the game. A bit of a buzz kill to take the L there but man, I’m glad the boys are back. It’s game 1 my dudes, 81 left. Let’s get ‘em Saturday

  30. photonnymous

The power play was embarrassing. Passes were lazy and risky, Laine and Johnny both seemed kinda out of it and missed opportunities if they were focused or facing the right way

Some positive? Marchenko and Elvis both looked really good.

  31. IAmCastetter

THATS IT!!! Time to go through the players phones!!!

  32. Master_Republic_144

Bean was always a good puck mover, but he looked amazing tonight. Much more assertive and smart and affective with his aggressiveness and jumping into the play.

Johnny didn’t have his best game, but tbh Laine was a turnover machine tonight and ruined offensive possession for the 1st line. It’s hard to be effective when your center is continuously giving up the puck and you’re back checking the whole game. I’m a supporter of him being center and it could really work out, but he needs to lock in and be responsible if he’s going to be rewarded with playing 1st line center. It’s just favoritism if he continues to be rewarded when he performs like he did today.

I always see people hate on Bemmer, but he really wasn’t bad. He was responsible and the Jenner line at least had some energy for the first part of the game.

There are 81 more games, but it’s disappointing to have that kind of performance for the season opener to a season where the roster is much improved and there is hope to compete.

Also, benching KJ when he’s one of your best wingers at connecting transition plays off the wall and in the neutral zone is just dumb. Its dumb from a player, tactical, and talent aspect. “Pace”, well to play with a good “Pace”, you need to connect plays. I think this game is a good lesson to the coaching staff that players who might not play at your desired “pace” can help the team and make the players around them better by actually creating and executing plays that allow the players around them to play faster. You also don’t have to skate 1000 mph to find soft zones on the ice to be open for opportunities. Teaching a player like KJ that he needs to start going crazy and grinding like a 4th line grinder is silly to me. He doesn’t need to be skating around like a Danforth/Kuraly to be effective. KJ isn’t where he needs to be with his acceleration and skating to dictate play with speed or changes in speed. Let him do what he does best and create with his mind and puck skills.
