Buffalo’s struggles on offense are easy to pinpoint. The top six forwards have combined for one point (JJ Peterka’s goal against the Rangers) while top defensemen Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power have one point apiece. The first line (Skinner, Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch) is a combined minus-8 while second-line center Dylan Cozens is minus-4.
The Sabres’ 11 high-danger chances thus far at 5-on-5 are tied with Dallas and New Jersey for 28th in the league, and their faceoff success rate sits 31st at an anemic 36%.
First-round rookie Zach Benson became the second-youngest skater to appear in a game for the Sabres when he logged 14:27 of ice time Thursday.
“Just keep working,” Skinner said. “We want to try and create opportunities. You keep creating opportunities, eventually they’ll go in.”
By far the best line has been Casey Mittelstadt between rookie Zach Benson and Jordan Greenway. That trio is plus-7 and Benson is leading the forwards in percentages for both Corsi (59.2% of the shot attempts) and expected goals (65.1%), according to Natural Stat Trick.
And while that shows how well the 18-year-old has played in his first two NHL games, it also is a stark reminder that a raw rookie should not be the team’s biggest offensive threat to date. Players throughout the lineup are still trying to get in synch.
“The Thompson-Tuch-Skinner line is an example. They haven’t quite found that yet,” said head coach Don Granato. “But we know when they do, it’s going to be impressive.”
Tuesday looks like a good chance as Buffalo goes for a third straight win over Tampa Bay for the first time since 2010. Through the first six days of the season, the Lightning entered Monday third from the bottom in the NHL in goals against (4.67) and also third from the bottom in shots on goal allowed per game (37.0).
