Shannon always has reasonable objective analysis. He does a good job of putting this start in perspective compared to the last 2 seasons.

He made my fears of how « must win » the next stretch of games are more concrete. Especially with his « teams who win 2 of their first 10 rarely make the playoffs. »

If we stick with his next 6 for the first 10 games:

    Carolina – 1-3-0 lifetime
    NYR – 1-3-0 lifetime
    Detroit – 3-0-0 lifetime
    Carolina – 1-3-0 lifetime
    Florida – 3-1-0 lifetime
Tampa Bay – 0-4-0 lifetime (sidenote: only team we’ve never beat)

If we just say history repeats itself, that puts us at 2-7-1 and 5 pts for the season out of 10 games and a potential 20 pts.

Doesn’t put us in a comfortable spot. We need to jump on Carolina and beat them like they’re hiding the cure from us.

Yeah I was curious when he said he was gonna do the video after last night’s game.

He was rightfully harsh on us in the power rankings, mentioned not being able to score. He does cover every team in the NHL, so I doubt he was looking too deep into numbers on us prior to making the dedicated video.

The xG vs GF disparity and shot % are pretty pronounced when you dig a bit. Usually teams that can’t score don’t look like we have, 3 goals on like 140 shots isn’t normal.

We do have a pretty soft schedule late in the season, so if we can just tread water here we’ve got a shot. Won’t have a winning record for a while though, so be ready for that.

Hopefully, we can beat Detroit, Florida, steal one from the Canes, and beat a Vasilevskiyless Lighting who has our number.

Leave us closer to .500 to face the onslaught of Oilers and Avs games right after this.

Shannon is a freakin stud. And I love hearing his thoughts because he doesn’t have a dog in the fight so to speak. He’s just giving thoughts based on facts not feelings.

    Two thoughts after watching…
If we drop the next two at home and struggle on the 4 road games, making the playoffs will be really tough.

But, second thought, maybe that’s ok? Don’t hear me giving up on the team. But what if we know the playoffs are a long shot by Nov 1? The team could still rip off some win streaks and beat some quality teams and have some fun this year. And what about Yams, Kartye and even Evans and Wright? And Matty? Getting all those guys some good development and experience with a strong finish to the year could be huge for this franchise. That wouldn’t be a “lost year” at all.

That said, I was at the game last night and I thought we won the first and second period. Dunn’s play is a concern and there is a general lack of feistiness which this team needs in order to win but I think they’ll get there. My evaluation of the first four games is that we got beat by Vegas and didn’t look ready. Then we played like crap in Nashville and got served. We took a good step forward in St Louis but still couldn’t finish. And last night we took another step forward sans the finishing.

I for one am excited for Carolina! If we take another step forward and can pull of a solid win, there is plenty of hope yet for this team!
