Typical Toronto doesn’t know talent when they see it. Holl has been a solid pickup so far

  2. Just as we all expected before the season started, Holl and Chiarot leading the league in +/-

    2024 Norris winner Justin Holl

If you say Justin Holl’s name really slowly it kinda sounds like Nicklas Lidstrom

Holl’s PDO is 125 and Chiarot’s is 110. The +/- will likely come down a bit as that regresses to the mean, but overall neither of them have been anywhere close to as awful as people were acting in the preseason.

Benny blew a tire and let a goal in but is still in the top of the league lol

Feels good to have actual NHL defensemen for our 2nd and 3rd pairing. Same with actual NHL forwards.

There have been times in the past 7 or so years that we’ve sucked and missed the playoffs where the Red Wings have had a hot start. But those hot starts to my eyes were always unsustainable. Close games where we barely pulled it out.

Some other fans would say things like no, they’re just being really gritty and playing for each other gutting out wins. I never bought that. You can gut out a win once in a while but doing it 4 out of 5 games means you’re probably just getting really lucky.

So as a pessimist that tends not to give too much benefit of the doubt just to the pure record, this season definitely feels different. On paper alone you can see that the roster is the strongest it’s been since we last made the playoffs. All the way up and down. And then you have the offense which is finally coming in. The biggest hole in our lineup for the past several years.

I’m still not going to say this is a playoff team with any kind of confidence. But that’s not because this team is bad. It’s because there’s too many good teams in the Atlantic. 5:1 win ratio is obviously not sustainable. I can see a 95+ point season though. Very easily. Maybe even 100+. Sadly that may still not be enough for a playoff spot. There are no bottom feeders in our division. Every team can make a case for either being a lock for the playoffs or being a bubble team. It’s just tough as fuck to get in.

It’s early but a two-goal lead in the scoring race is pretty impressive still.
