I’ve never played hockey but I’m old enough to remember when MacTavish was the last player in the NHL grandfathered in to not wearing a helmet, but not yet born when goalies didn’t wear masks. Despite the infrequency of players getting their necks slashed, I think 20 years from now people will look back and think it was equally as crazy that players didn’t wear neck guards, helmets or goalie masks.

  2. Oshie’s hockey stuff (Warroad) is expensive, but seeing that the collar isn’t squeezing the neck has me a lot more interested.

  3. Looks like a neck guard for Imperial stormtroopers. Don’t worry about the gaps.

^(Yes, it’s still way better than being completely unprotected, I know.)

Question, why don’t they just wear cut proof meshing around their neck akin to cut proof gloves worn while using blades and knives in construction?

I played youth hockey with one of those flat plastic goalie masks. I took a shot to the chin and it was horrible! It prevented stitches. It did not prevent a sore face for several weeks. I started wearing a padded baseball catchers mask instead.

We also wore these little plastic cages that fit just over the mouth, as a skater. A teammate took a puck into that and it broke. The pieces lodged into his mouth. He was one ugly guy for months after. This was the early 70’s.

I switched to ski team instead. And a teammate there took a bamboo pole to the neck. It split around and stabbed through in a few places. And did not hit anything critical. He is luck to be alive today. Now they use plastic poles only.

Oh yea no way a skate blade will get around that.

When did Plekanec join the league again??

Ps no hate at all. Everyone should stay safe out there.

I remember the only upside of transitioning to adult leagues, after years playing youth hockey and college club hockey, was all the equipment I didn’t have to wear. I immediately lost the cage and shoulder pads and felt liberated. Over the last 20yrs I’ve added back every piece of equipment I was so excited to ditch. Just added a neck guard last week.

Funny how things work out sometimes.

This is too soon – not enough research as been done. If they try to force mandatory neck guards on players I think we will have another insurrection

  10. thatguy752000

We used to wear a neck guard that velcroed around the neck when I played youth hockey in the 80’s. I just assumed the older players weren’t required to wear them so they didn’t.

  11. If they find a way for them to not restrict head mobility or be overly hot/uncomfortable, I can see more players using them.

For now, seems like the benefits of not having one outweigh the risks.

  12. Mikey_5386

They should grandfather in neck guards. Do like they did with visors. Make it mandatory in AHL and mandatory at the nhl level for players born after a certain date.

  13. GroundbreakingCow775

Can’t wait to see sponsors on these

  14. WolfOfPort

After tumbling in pile ups and seeing skates get real close I got a neck guard for beer league. Doesn’t invade mobility at all seems like a no brainer sad someone had to die first

  15. Judge_Rhinohold

Looks like there’s still lots of exposed neck in that first picture.

  16. Heading to PIA Sports and and grabbing mine today

  17. DutchOvenMaster11

It is rare for a player to get his throat slashed, I can only recall twice in the NHL. As a kid we always had to wear neck guards playing hockey.

What I don’t really understand about the situation is professional hockey players have so much protective equipment, but yet they have one of the most fragile parts of the body exposed that can quickly lead to death.

  18. free_mustacherides

They’ll do this but not cages. Pucks to the face are much more common than a skate cut.

  19. BrianSpillman

We wear neck guards as kids and I always thought it was foolish that the pro’s don’t wear them.

  20. I sweat so much, I can’t imagine wearing that, I’d get so hot. I wear my faceguard and that somewhat protects my neck.

  21. KolhiiHead69

EK65 is not fucking around with his, I’m actually happy to see this. Always thought it was crazy how most guys don’t wear neck guards.

  22. ConsciousText3184

I am surprised that we haven’t seen more players go down. I remember the incident with goalie Clint Malarchuk when he almost bled to death if not for a quick responding trainer

  23. notatpeace39

Can’t believe this took so long. Honestly just a great idea to ensure players don’t get injured from freak accidents. Long overdue

  24. Mothman405

Wayne from Letterkenny is absolutely thrilled right now

  25. mnpoolplayer22

Aren’t those warroad ones like 120 or something?

  26. LadyNelson1805

I hope this doesn’t result in recklessness with their blades
Keep your skates on the ice !!!

  27. Griswaldthebeaver

Is that Tom Wilson in pic 1? Man is yoked

  28. ytrehtthgie

Even tho I’m sure they have special material they do not look like they are stopping a sharp skate blade

  29. TwistedNipplez

I’m actually surprised players are wearing the stuff. Good to see for sure.

  30. RollingCarrot615

I get why players didn’t or don’t wear neck guards. They know the risk, but as with so many things with low probability they think it’ll never happen to them. Seeing it happen the mentality shifted (atleast temporarily) to what if it does happen to me?

Dammit its awful that it had to happen this way.

  31. hockeyguy26er

The only real reason they have never worn them is because they don’t look cool.. same with helmets and visors back in the day. Once it’s normalized it will be no big deal.
