Hate to miss a stream… but LOVE to see Marner begin producing! Thanks for another killer livestream Zack!
*Warning – Long comment incoming* I was at the game and it was great but post-game celebrating meant I missed the stream! Kinda odd to celebrate against the home team Stars, but hey gotta support our Leafs! I wanted to note a few observations I saw live and first-hand. Before I get to individual players, I do want to say that this was one of the least physical games I have ever seen. Neither team had any interest in the rough stuff, even Reaves was subdued. I would've liked to see the Leafs adjust a bit in the 2nd period when their offense wasn't clicking because getting that late period Mitch goal saved them. In the playoffs you're going to need that physical presence at some point so I hope they use the regular season to establish they are capable of that style.
*Willy Nylander looks so locked in that during TV timeouts he just skates around exuding a focus and confidence that is impressive. Every shift Willy does at least 1 thing to create a scoring opportunity — sometimes it's a subtle move, but his vision and decision making is elite level.
*Woll is a beast. I was sitting behind Woll for 2 periods and he wants the puck…I mean you can sense that the more shots he gets the stronger he feels. He also looks very relaxed and comfortable in the crease so it's not he's relying on some temporary adrenaline rush that will expire at some point. You know how some people watch horses before a big race and can see something that confirms how fit and ready a horse is to win the upcoming race, it's the same for J-Woll, soon as he slides the facemask down, you just know he is ready and it will take a lot to beat him. I kept hearing Stars fans mumbling about how good this goalie was and who was he!? Interesting he was once on the same team as Oettinger, and Woll was the starter!
*Bertuzzi was flying around efforting in a way that is just contagious. He is willing to anywhere on the ice to dig out the puck. He has a great feel for the game and works hard to be where he needs to be. He also has great ice vision, like Nylander, but in a physical way.
*Klingberg had a nice calming influence whenever he was on the ice, but especially on the PP. He is not a dominate defensive player but is rather good at poke-checking and disrupting opponents.
*Gregor brought a burst that opened up the ice. He may not score that much but he keeps pressure on and you notice when he's out there.
*Morgan Rielly looked healthy and was having a lot of fun out there, especially on the offensive end. He continues to find the open spots and puts the puck on the net. He's handled adding Klingberg to the roster and his new role well — which not all players can do.
*Domi is pressing a bit. He wants to contribute, and the effort is there, but just doesn't look quite comfortable. He played on 3 teams within the last year so I think he just needs a little time to get to know his teammates. I predict he'll have a huge presence on this team by the time the playoffs start.
*Brodie looked better, after a few rough games to start the season, during the Stars he seemed in the flow of the game and wasn't overthinking what to do with the puck. I was really worried about him, but felt better after watching him live. He needs to keep trending in this direction.
*Knies is a star in the making and is always around when good things happen, but as expected, you can tell he is still learning and adapting to the speed of the NHL. I really hope he stays healthy because he is willing to sacrifice his body to contribute.
*AM, Mitch and JT are who they are and everyone knows that they are elite players who are capable of big things whenever they are on the ice and dang it was fun watching them do their thing.
GLG!!!!!! It was cool representing and being a part of the Leafs Blue Army in a sea of Green jerseys!
