it's the coach's job to have the team start playing with passion at the opening faceoff of the first period. obviously this team is not being motivated to start on time. In the NHL, over the past 12 seasons, the team that has scored the first goal has gone on to win 66% of the time. judging by their pedestrian starts to games, the Leafs are obviously oblivious to this statistic.
