@Islanders de New York

  1. I was a little conflicted about this game as a pens fan. For one, an Oilers downfall was and still would be hilarious but as a fan of a division rival, an Isles downfall is good for business.

  2. I think that everyone was behind Woodcroft staying but that’s not what happened, let’s just be happy for Knoblauch to have a great first game win.

  3. This is a team with a fading cast unfortunately and a weak core that really isn't one to build around. it is crazy to read through their lineup and realize how long some of these players have been with the team. And often, not because they are super good or anything. Strange stuff and really I think complacency is to blame more than anything but the Lee and Barzal contracts are not aging well (and they never were solid investments) and you know Horvat is on the cusp of inevitable decline.

  4. Stop pulling your goalie when your down by 2!! You cannot score a power play goal to save your life, what makes you think you can score 2 late in the game?? All that happens is that you let up empty net goals!!! Fans boycott going to games until Lambert is fired!! Please!

  5. Sorokin is a stud. Game wasn't his fault. The islanders are barely scoring. Can't win games if you cant score goals

  6. As a islanders fan this is really disappointing but can’t really blame that goal on sorokin hope we have a bounce back

  7. They don't have it this season? They never had it. The piles relied on covid seasons to make it far. They're a team made up of fourth liners with one mediocre first line. Their best offensive player hasn't scored 20 goals since Tavares was feeding him in his rookie season. They get bailed out by Sorokin, who is currently not playing well. They have no prospects in the pipeline. Lou will probably trade another 1st for a washed bum. I wouldn't mind.

  8. As a rangers fan, the isles rn remind me a lot of the 2010s rangers. They’re mediocre at best, but sorokin is so good it can mask their flaws. If sorokin is even a little off, the isles lose

  9. Islanders were doomed to fail after they fired Barry Trotz – welcome back to mediocrity. Hopefully it doesn't last 20 years this time?

  10. So much is made of the goaltenders stats season to season, when really it has far more to do with the difference in defensive play from the other 5 skaters on the ice. Goaltenders may have the most influence over GAA and SAV, but it really is a team stat.

As far as Varlamov vs Sorokin, it is still a very small sample size. But some goaltenders do better on the scramble and manage to pull out decent (but not excellent) stats when the D is failing, whereas others are best when they are staying compact and conservative in their movements, and are capable of taking it up to the next level when the entire team and D structure is playing great. If you're going to go anywhere in the postseason, you want the latter. Sorokin is the latter.

  11. Lowkey the problem is coaching. Trotz left and we cratered. Lambert is a totally fraudulent loser.

And knowing youre a Rags fan feels like rubbing it in 😅

  12. The worst part, they keep blowing leads almost every game. If we don’t make some changes here, they might fall into no mans land

  13. To me watching this game as an outside observer the Islanders look real thin on offense. They had a number of shots but not many looked high danger. The Oilers won this game because the Islanders took two costly penalties they shouldn't have.

  14. He didn't lose the shot it got flicked up and slapped in instantly. Disgusting flick by McDavid

  15. I think the second goal was more of an issue with defense as opposed to Sorokin. As a defense you can't let someone get that good of positioning but yeah he had a bad night

  16. Isles fan, you handled it very non-biasedly and unfortunately I agree with everything. I actually hated the horvat trade the moment it happened. I felt we gave too much, and I didnt think he was the right fit (but im a fan watching hockey, not someone who's job it is to see the potential in lines). And then his contract seemed awful to me (but i didnt like him from the offset lol), I really don't find a lot fo be hopeful lately, Sorokin hasn't looked great in every moment, but on the big flashes of talent its hard to not be hopeful as far as he's concerned. He has some training to iron out still but I still have high hopes.

  17. you havent been watching the other games then. hes been playing great. Sorokin isnt getting any run support by the offense

  18. I physically laughed out loud when he said that the islanders were one of the best teams in the east😂😂 they haven’t been good in most of our lifetimes

  19. As an oilers fan, Sorokin looked like he played AMAZING that game. he prevented a ton of goals in the first two period and only let in two because of his team taking dumb penalties and the oilers power play being back to it's usual self.

  20. Lets see how Edmonton does against some decent competition. Their schedule has been relatively easy and the few good teams they've played have all resulted in a loss.

  21. I wouldn’t say Sorokin played horrible. You make a good point on the two goals but I have seen a lot worse.

  22. Horvat's been one of the more consistent players since he got there. The rest of the team, not so much

  23. So, a few thoughts on the Islanders. Fans have been concerned with the roster for some time. "Old and slow" are repeated complaints. While there has been some movement to improve this (ex. adding Horvat and Engvall) watching the team against the Devils and Avs showed them skating like they were in mud compared to their opponents. Horvat is a good addition as he is able to complement Barzal and you saw the dropoff in talent when Bo was out for a few games this season. Holmstrom looks like another potential good addition to the team. But that's nowhere near enough. Too many mistakes getting out of their own zone leading to too many opportunities for opponents to get second, third, and even fourth attempts to set up and score. The inability to clear the zone with any skill and regularity weighs on the rest of the team's play. Mayfield in particular. Behind him is Bolduc who has been considered so poor by Lambert that he has not played near a full game any time he's in the lineup. Given that goals have been scored in the 2nd and 3rd periods when he's off the ice seems like this is a coaching problem. But if you have no confidence in your 3rd D-pair, then that's a huge roster hole. Add in the fact that Lou has yet to get a puck-moving defenseman (esp. after they traded Toews). Too many players have not performed this season, including Palmiri, Lee, and Pageau. Also the fourth line looks tired and old. We love Cal, we love Martin, but that line is not shutting offenses down like they used to, and the checking is no where near what they were during their deep playoff runs. While Wally is a fan favorite, he still is recovering from his knee injury last season, but even so, has not developed into the sniper the team and fans were hoping for. This is on Lou. He has stood pat for too long, and signed a string of expensive long-term contracts has left the team in a bind. Lambert has not been able to create any discipline on ice (note the repeated bad penalties taken this season). If you look at the stats, Offensive zone time is way under what it should be, and the extensive time in their own zone, coupled with tons of shots has left Sorokin exposed. That's on the defense and coaching though, not him. Add to the problem is Lou's depletion of the Islander's farms system, and you're left with a mediocre team. With a large number of long-term seats up for renewal this year is going to put ownership on the spot.

  24. Islanders were fraudulent. They had a coach that knew what every team was going to do next and could call bluff against almost any powerhouse.

  25. The islanders are such a snooze fest. Even when the rangers are losing they’re still more fun to root for. Rags will always be New Yorks team

  26. Its not just Sorokin. The entire Islanders team looks bad. No playoffs for them this season, but all NY teams except the Rangers have been bad, so Islanders fans can root for the Rangers.
