We gave up 3 goals on 5 shots in the third period yesterday… I like to think that with Vasy back, we do not do that and we don’t need to score 5 to win a game. I’m not saying JJ has been bad, I’m just saying he’s been mediocre.

I think we can all admit that JoJo has been way better than expected, he was a good bet for us to make, he’ll be a fantastic backup and he’s played a big part in keeping us alive during this opening stretch, and also admit that the team will benefit from getting our 9.5M future HHOF goaltender back. I think both of those things can be true at the same time.

Yeah we need Vasi back, I think we all agree on that. I’m not ready to shit on JoJo though either. Dude has played all of about 12 games in the league was was supposed to be a backup, not thrust into starter role right off the bat. I think given the circumstances, hes exceeded expectations. He’d also have better stats if our D didn’t give up so many chances.

JoJo has been very very solid, but he’s still a high end backup or low end starter level goalie. Vasy is an all-world goalie, one of the best to ever play. So although I’ve been incredibly impressed by JoJo, it will still obviously be a bump up when Vasy gets back.

Vasy won’t change our point percentage much if the team doesn’t improve.

I’m sick of this « Jojo has been fine », « Jojo has not been the problem », « Jojo has been better than expected » crap. Basically proves that your eye tests are not reliable. Here are some facts; among goalies who have played 9+ games (Starters), Jojo is:
* 27th in Goals Saved Above Expected at -4
* 27th in WAR
* 19th in low danger save percentage
* 30th in medium danger save percentage
* 13th in high danger save percentage (which is the eye test bait here)
Point is, he is a backup, and did anyone expect differently? He may be better than Curtis McElhinney was but these are legitimately numbers that lose you games. I get that the defense has not been great either but statistics like these are isolating of defensive performance, and they reveal that Jojo has not been starter quality either.

We’re in a good position if we can get Vasi back in the net and keep playing like we did last night against Boston. That said, we do not know if Vasi will be the same as free he returns so I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

Johansson has been a replacement-level goalie. Which is to say, he hasn’t been terrible and he hasn’t been great.
He makes some insane saves, but he’ll also let in unscreened stinkers, his rebound control is comically absent and I clench every time he leaves the net to play the puck.

We can’t allow so many shots to begin with

I have a serious question: are people expecting an instant goaltending improvement once Vasy is back?
I’m a little nervous about how things will look for the first few games once he returns. No shade to Vasy of course, but goalies often struggle after coming back from an extended break.
I’d also like to remind everyone that Vasy was less than stellar last season. I’m very much hoping it was just a blip and that he’s back at 100% when he returns, but I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t end up putting up the kind of numbers people expect.
