I don’t love this on theory. But in this particular scenario it’s fine, as I don’t see the Maple Leafs as an ideal trade partner. Their lack of cap space basically guarantees Calgary needs to retain 50% in any trade. Because of that, they should have to pay more than market value.

If it’s a petty thing with Treliving leaving then yeah I get it, and Murray Edwards probably still is a big baby, but I also wouldn’t want to retain half on Tanev with around 75% of the season remaining. That’s around $1.7M in dead money
