Here comes a 5th round pick.

Primeau could 100% be trade bait. Allen as a backup is fine.

The Columbus fallacy is so random, where did the « Elvis is disappointing » even came from? The guy has a .910sv% on a team that all predictions saw as a bottom 4 team in the eastern conference. Also, if I’m a rebuilding team I’m not trading a 29 years old goalie with good stats for an AHL goalie turning 32 soon for the sake of saving 400k on the cap without serious assets also coming over (Broberg ++).
At this point I’d simply consider offloading Allen with no retention a good transaction as the carousel lasted long enough. Keep you retention slot for a bigger move this offseason. Foegele, Broberg for unretained Allen and a C prospect or late pick. Broberg had as much value as Calimaki in his late Calgary days.

Problem with Allen is that the entire league knows his play breaks down with too many starts. So there’s a starts cap on him, which limits his value if EDM wants a goalie they can just set and forget for the rest of the season.
Primeau’s value is minimal. He’s 24 and there’s little to go on (26 games over 5 seasons) at the NHL level. That’s the kind of hopeful reclamation project you acquire as a FA, on waivers, or in a trade for another fringe NHLer reclamation project (who’s not an 8th overall pick 4 yrs ago like Broberg). It’s not anything you invest resources in when you’re looking for stability between the pipes.
