Looks like the Canucks are getting priced out of the Ethan Bear sweepstakes.
The free agent defenseman has interest from a number of teams but doesn’t seem like Vancouver will be part of a bidding war.

Get your money bear. Hope you have a steller season.
It would be really fucking nice if Brad Treliving could come up with a Free Agent Strategy that wasn’t « who played for the Canucks last year »
Dang. Makes sense, though. He’s worth more than league minimum.
That’s all good and fair, let’s not handicap ourselves again with an unnecessarily big contract for a guy coming off a big surgery who is a #5/6 quality D.
A better defenceman will be available at the TD. 🤷🏻♂️
« Ethan Bear sweepstakes »
Lol, I love the guy and hope he does well but I wouldn’t exactly call this a sweepstake.
I like Bear, but not enough to give him big dollars and term. I was hoping the injury uncertainty would lead him to a short term show-me deal, but team are desperate enough for RHD (and Hughes pumped his value enough) that I could see him getting something like 3.5×4+ which i wouldn’t feel comfortable with
I liked Bear but i’m not losing sleep about not signing him
Good on Bear for getting teams looking for him. He’s a decent D, but if teams are bidding on him, I’d rather be out
A RD that can actually move the puck and contribute in both zones would have been perfect. We’re missing it badly.
Oh well, guess it’s Myers time for the rest of the season.
Way too high risk coming off a tough injury. Not worth it imho
How many teams are presenting you a chance to potentially play alongside someone Hughes? You can make more short term money signing somewhere else, but your odds of getting more long term money is really high in Vancouver. But hey, that’s his choice to make. Glad the Canucks aren’t looking at getting into a bidding war over a #6 D. If Toronto wants to overpay him, go ahead.
Essentially, would you rather have Bear and an additional $1.5-2m or Zadorov.
Not losing sleep over this unless Bear looks better than he did pre-injury which would be unlikely.
Don’t chase the bus.
Good call. Without seeing how he recovers from surgery, it’s not the safest bet to make. We’ll be counting pennie’s at the deadline, and can’t afford to miss.
Bear would hardly tip the scales but at least he would’ve been free. Maybe this encourages management to make a shiftier move? This team is one top 4 D-man from doing some serious damage.
Would be nice to have more D depth, but he isn’t going to move the needle for anyone.
Bear is not worth being in a bidding war over, and the urgency of needing bear has been lessened by the acquisition of Zadorov despite the handedness difference.
Juulsen has been fine as a 5/6 guy and even Myers has had fewer gaffes than usual. I say we ride this out and re-evaluate in the offseason to see what shakes loose.
Sweepstakes…Bear is the new Ohtani? where’s the website where we can track his jet.
(thank you for your service Bear, get paid lots man)
Kessel it is, then
Sweepstakes?!
For Bear?
<.< >.>
Never thought I’d see « Ethan Bear » and « sweepstakes » in the same sentence haha.
I like the guy but let Toronto overpay for him, they’re gonna be even more desperate now that their starter’s injured.
If this ends up being the case then at least one of soucy/zadorov need to step up and prove they can play big top 4 minutes like they came here to prove. Ian Cole has been amazing but idk if playing him 20 mins every night at his age is sustainable especially come playoff time.
In an ideal world, if a soucy/zadorov pairing works out Cole could anchor Myers down, reel in his chaos, and also make tocchet/Foote confident enough in the bottom 4 d-corps to keep Hughes-hronek together instead of splitting them up like they have been lately.
That sucks. We were kind of counting on him coming back but I guess there was no guarantee
This is the second worst free agency news I’ve heard in the past 10 minutes
I mean, I was all for bringing him back when it was like around a mil for a year, but definitely he’s a third pairing guy coming off a major injury so I wouldn’t really be paying much. There’s a lot of desperate teams needing D right now so I don’t blame the guy at all for cashing in.
Thinking out loud a bit, I wonder if we see Vancouver maybe pursue Troy Stecher if AZ looks to move him between now and the deadline.
Competent #6/7 defender that can kill penalties, and is cheap. Similar to Bear but maybe a little less on the cap depending what Bear ends up getting.
I think we still sign him.
This feels like management floating a story to the media to let Bear know they have a walk-away points. He wants to be here, he want’s to have the chance to play with Hughes, I think it happens
He’s a 7D and should be paid accordingly. If a team wants to pay him big then get that bag Bear.
Better than Shohei ohtani sweepstakes
Aaaannnnddddd that’s a no.
Get paid Bear! We will be okay
At least he’ll get his bag after the unfortunate injury and missing so much hockey. I like him and hope he does well!
Go get your money Bear!
If the Jays were a lock for Ohtani, and Canucks are out on Bear…does that mean we sign Bear?
Well then maybe Bear should lower his price and just take a hometown discount with us smh…

Jk I hope he gets what he wants/deserves and thrives wherever here goes, hopefully with us!
He’s missing the boat, if he signed with us and somehow managed to slot in next to Hughes he could potentially see a big stat bump for next years deal.
