The Pens have to get their act together and win a lot of games if they want to see the playoffs.
I feel like the problem on the PP isn't the personnel or the positioning, but rather the lack of movement. They're, if anything, predictable. They try to force passes across ice or shots through lanes that were never open. They need to cycle AND move the puck. It's so stagnant. They should move organically between an umbrella and overload.
You’re right, most of the games have been a struggle to watch this season. This is just a bad team. Everyone who watches knows this, the old players are great as they are/were can’t carry the team anymore and you can’t win with no depth
I don't disagree, their effort last night was so lackluster that you can't help but think they quit on Sullivan. There was no pushback, no urgency, they weren't even skating hard. Watching that game I swear it looked like they were skating in slow motion. I honestly think it's time for Dubas to do something drastic. Something has gotta give if they're still trying to "win now," but I'm not even sure what can be done. A big trade is next to impossible due to the amount of no-movement clauses, and I really don't think Sullivan is gonna get fired in season. I could be wrong about Sullivan because who knows what Dubas is thinking, but I feel like a coaching change is only gonna happen if they miss the playoffs again.
The pens need more muscle too many finesse players.
I just think that this team is in a major rut now and it's carried over in the mental aspect of how they play. The PP is evidence of that. I'm not ready to want Sully fired yet, but if the way they played in last nights game carries over into the next several games, then maybe they won't have a choice except to fire him. This team needs some sort of clean slate to get back up again. I'm not sure who they can possibly replace him with but there's gotta be someone out there.
I agree with what Pat said about 20 minutes in. These guys are professional athletes. It shouldn't take 2 months to "figure it out."
I have been saying it for about a year now. Sully does not have the room like he once did and the system is stale. It's time for the team to move on. It's not that he is a bad coach, he's great, but everything must come to an end. And unless the team is willing to blow it all up and break the core up and start a rebuild now, you owe it to the veterans to give them a shot of adrenaline before you make any crazy decisions. To me, that means new coaching staff. Other teams have figured out how to shut the pens/sully's system down. We need something new.
They quit on sully 3/4 of the way through last season. They have barely been playing for him for the last three years now. They arent growing under sullivan any more. These are elite athletes that eathier need new scenery or coaching after the same thing for years.
Off topic, but you guys are doing a terrific job breaking everything down. You're realistic without leaning into doomerism while being thoughtful and inclusive of different perspectives. As disappointing as the team's results on the ice are right now, it's been terrific to watch you guys grow your chemistry together all season long. Cheers guys, keep up the great work.
I think a tradable asset we have right now is Ned. Even though I’d really hate to see him go, the way he’s playing and how some good teams are really struggling with goaltending, I’d bet we could get something good for him.
It's getting to the point, with the power play, that we may be seeing Ryan Graves on PP1, as a forward, just to get someone to park in front of the net and obstruct the goalie's vision.
Part of the issue, in my opinion, is that Sully, over the last few seasons, has started to shorten the bench far too quickly. Compare the Pens ice time numbers, at even strength, to the teams at the top of the league. The Pens 3rd and 4th lines combine for a period of ice time. The top two lines average over 15 minutes, each. If you look at Vegas, the difference between their line with the most ice time and their line with the least ice time is 2 minutes.
You have to let the guys get into the game. If only to give the stars a break…you can't have them racking up 15 minutes, at even strength, and then tack on special teams time.
In today's practice, Sully had carter as 3rd line center. Ridiculous! The guy should never see north of 8 min/game and should dress every 4th game at best. Its ridiculous that he just wont change. If they want to use him, have him hang out in front of the net on PP. When carter was replaced with Z on the 3rd line, with eller and DOC there was a spark. when hinestroza replaced carter on the 4th line with nieto and acciari, there was speed. But now he is moving carter up? Why? If thats where sullivan is going to play him, i am all for firing sullivan as he is not capable of change. Evanston is available, right? Or promote Vallucci and take PP from Reirdon. Or promote Reirdon and give PP to Vallucci. But the words "reirdon" and "PP" should never be in the same sentence again.
Dubas gave them two games. One down one to go. We'll see what he does. He's proven he can make things happen. But what, well have to wait. No matter how bad our team is I'll always listen to ya'll.
If you aren't ready to fire Sullivan at this point, take your blinders off. Great coach or not. The team doesn't play for him anymore and hasn't for a long time now
This is when we really miss a grinder like Tanev. Buddy had infectious perseverance (sometimes more than his skill could match, but still something we could use rn)
Maybe it’s a case of too many big dogs and not having a single voice to follow. When the coach is weak, the responsibility automatically goes to the vets… we have all the tools! It’s maddening
I just feel like the players aren't behind sully anymore, it just seems like they quit even caring or trying if sully is the coach. It's already known that his system does not work with this team and he refuses to change the system. I just don't c anything else to do right now then a coaching change.i no he just signed a new contract, is there anything they can do, or does it go against the cap, I don't no how coach salaries work
