Players that have had that kind of surgery, have, for the most part, not come back to even close to their former skill level. I wish him, and the Ref Wings luck with this.

Wowsa!! So, the wait is over and Patrick Kane lands in Detroit–this is definitely big breaking news–The Red Wings are doing OK and adding a stud like Kane makes the whole situation better–it'll be interesting to see what difference he makes on the team. Of course, I wish the Blues had expressed an interest, but, I totally get why they weren't in on the bidding, no cap flexibility and not a good fit IMHO., the current Blues are more of a grinding team with little offensive power beyond the 2nd line.

Kane and Debrincat were a deadly combo in Chicago. Genius move by Stevie Y. Hope Patrick is up to it – that's the only question. He has been such a great player and if healthy enough could make the Wings a serious contender.
This will have the same short term impact as the Mike Modano, Daniel Alfredsson, Paul Coffey and Brad Park signings – late career swan song years to draw in fans and show their loyalty to future HOF players. Hip resurfacing is the hardest surgery to come back from in all of sports, but it's only 60 games and we still have some cap left. Hope the Cat is happy as hell and they light it up, but it's not going to help the iffy D corps one iota.

$1 M guaranteed salary for rest of 23-24.
$250k bonus for playing 50+ games
$100k for every game winning goal
$50k for every game winning assist
$25k for every point above even +/-
$250k for every round won in the playoffs
$500k is he scores more than 50 points in regular season
If he hits on all cylinders, the bonuses should come close to Detroit's remaining salary cap

As a big Blackhawks fan, I will say even if Kaner is a little slower, or less agile, he's able to adapt and still be a huge asset!
Not sure how I feel about this as a Wings fan. He's still in recovery and his age is a concern. Maybe a future trade piece? Maybe a part of a larger trade coming? It's Yzerman so who knows..
I'm just glad it wasn't buffalo. Hats off to him, but he did not fit with the youth of Buffalo. Detroit looks like a playoff team, Buffalo looks to be fringe at best, most likely next year for the Sabres. Kane deserves to go out on his terms. If he lost his speed, he offers little D. Still worth a gamble.

Historically after that kind of surgery players haven’t faired too well , BUT it’s a low risk move that could pay off in spades for the wings . I wish Kane all the best . Cheers 🇨🇦

Patrick should be paying the Detroit Red Wings to play there. Oh well Steve has money to toss away. Hopefully Steve hasn't lost any of his key marbles before picking up that telephone. NHL GMs make expensive phone calls. Throwing money away for free seems to be the common denominator all NHL GMs share. It's happening all over the NHL; from top to bottom.
