As someone that started watching hockey in the early 1990's the modern NHL is maddening to watch. I still don't get half the shit that goes on in today's hockey. The game is maddening to watch at times.
McCarty played in the same time period as several other "enforcers" that had tragic lives. A number of those guys died of CTE and related issues. Bob Probert, Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien, Wade Belak, and Steve Montador all died at 45 years or younger. Was DMac involved in producing ome of that brain trauma.
Push the league to do things like review every questionable hit. How about having two for one suspensions, you sideline a guy for a week, you sit two? Most of all let's stop glorifying old school brain trauma.

Same penalty for tapping a guy on the hands with your stick or getting your stick parallel with a players midesction as it is knocking a guy out with a crosscheck, and that is an issue. Headshots, intentional or not, auto 5 minute. Then the refs can review and if it turns out they got it wrong reduce or nix it. Intentionals should carry an auto 2 game minimum. Players will adapt. But as D-Mac said its within the rules and culture to get away with this Sh@% now.
I'm a big Wings fan, but I gotta say, as much as I'd like to see Joseph get his ass handed to him, he did not cross-check Larkin in the head. He had one hand on his stick. Watch the replay. Slow it down. It's pretty clear from the front angle.

Since the hit, I keep hearing that it was a cheap shot like Perron did.
