Perhaps this is less about Rannta & more about giving 24 year old Kochetkov his shot?
Maybe freeing cap space for trades coming in?
Giving Kochetkov NHL ice time so he has trade value?
Maybe Raanta is up for trade?
Lots of legit reasons for Canes to shuffle their goalies without putting Raanta out to pasture.
NHL hasn't heard the last of Antii, he'll back by playoffs… no salary cap.
I see Antii as backup for Freddy.

Raanta has more experience in playoffs than Kochetkov.
Unless there's injury we don't know of, he'll get a groove back in the AHL – less stress. He does well there
Kochetkov came in like a bat out of hell winning his first three games, his records not that great since those first three
Cane's need to test him to see if he can sustain level off, get consistent.
Work through his honeymoon period- see what they've got.

Kochetkov is good, but he’s streaky. Would be better suited as a backup honestly.

As a canes fan, completely agree with what you said here.
Kochetkov hasn't had enough games consecutively to really get the development he needs. This stretch will be good for him to show what he can do and help him really adjust to an NHL level, he had a great record in the NHL last year and won the Calder Cup in the AHL. All the Hurricanes goalies are good goalies, they're just not performing this year. Kochetkov is turning it around, it also doesn't help that the Hurricanes have had two 6 game road trips to the west coast without much home games. I think the Hurricanes have the most road games so far this season. This road trip ended with back to back games, one in Detroit and then in Raleigh after going all over Canada in about a week. That would wear anybody out. The Hurricanes players were looking sleepy in the Oilers game, Calgary, and Canucks games. Then kinda brought it back but were sloppy in the Sens and Redwings games. It's been a combination of rough scheduling and atypical defensive performance. Hurricanes seem to have adjusted by playing 7 defenseman and Martin Necas has been looking like a 3rd defenseman when he's been out in the past few days.
