Ron Duguay epic hair. Only one close back then was Reggie Leach for the Flyers. 1970s, early 80s hockey…. Nothing like it. So many tough players. Grew up with the Big Bad Bruins, but always had such respect for those Islander teams. Loved watching Gilles and Nystrom. And of course, Bosse. Nick Fotiu for the Rangers too. I'm sure he lost a fight somewhere, but I never saw it. Thanks for this video. Love em.
Goddammit I loved this Ranger team and these announcers this rivalry and the NHL in the 70's and 80's. Jim Gordon and the Big Whistle were the absolute best. Jim did the Giants games on the radio too. NY had such great local announcers back in the day. Gordon and the Big Whistle. Bill White, Frank Messer Phil Rizzuto with the Yankees. Bob Sheppard the PA announcer at Yankke and Giants Stadium. Jim Karvellas & Marv Albert with the Knicks. Kiner, Murphy, McCarver Zabriskie and others for the Mets. Golden age in NY for me.
This was my first NHL game ever. I was 11. My best friend was a band wagon Isles fan. His big sister and her boyfriend were Rangers fans and took us to the game. NO TICKETS ! Just a few old stubs and a folded 20 dollar bill. Up to the Blue seats…What a zoo ! Dark, people smoking pot, couples making out and fights all over the place.Down in the Green seats they brought in individual signs and spelled out POTVIN SUCKS…the crowd yelling out each letter as they held it up. Fights all over the ice. They threw a fish onto the ice at Billy Smith. One of the greatest nights of my life !
Awesome stuff. I was 12 at the time and was a hockey nut. Jethro Gillies was one tough SOB. He didn’t drop them all, that much because of the respect I think other players had for his ability to throw them. Potvin was such a cheap shot artist. As a Blackhawk fan I remember when Billy Smith broke Curt Fraser’s cheek bone with the butt end of his goalie stick. I think no matter what your opinion of fighting in hockey there was always that exciting anticipation when there were two heavy weights on the ice eyeballing each other.

John D'Amico was a tough, strong linesman. He often worked a lot of the big rivalry games when there would be trouble. RIP
Could never figure out how Gillies and Futiu or Futiu/Nystrom never fought…
Or Beck vs.Gillies or Nystrom
Wonder what Mike Bossy tell to Fotiu ?
Fotiu scared shitless of Nystrom or other way around?
When rivalries meant something.
Nystrom and Jethro knew better than to even look at Nicky.
And later on that season, the Rangers got swept out of the semifinals by the Islanders, outscoring the Blueshits by 22-8.
Nystrom wanted no part on Nicky
6:55 What a cheap shot by Johnstone. Imagine if Persson hadn't been wearing a helmet.
Eddie amazing player.
Eddie was a Ranger.Gave everything for The team.

The dulcet voice of Caaaahl Maaaahtin (Carl Martin) on the MSG PA…
They were 2 overrated teams….so bad….
Islanders wasn't a Dynasty…..they were all goons….0 talents
Gilles and Nystrom were understandably terrified of Nick Fotiu.
Hospodar was a punk, a paper tiger, wore a dress under his uniform
I think…I was at this game. It could very well be the back of my head. Of course, I had a lot of hair back then, so it could be anyone. LGR
Gillies sure skated away from Fotiu very fast.
In this video, Nystrom showed his best punch…the sucker punch!!!
I have been a Ranger fan since 1971,Rangers-Isle was a great rivalry, too bad the Rangers only won the 1979 playoff series against the Islanders.
This result was few and far between back in the day. My Rangers were owned by the Islanders from 1980-1984.
The great Jim Gordon…and Uncle Bill Chadwick….may they both be at peace..
PURE. This is my game. Thanks for all these vids. This is the hockey that made me love the game… No Muffins allowed
Was this after the Wendy's chili incident at Nassau Mausolueum?
Hockey was so much more fun and intense back then.
Eddie Johnstone should have received a five minute major and a game misconduct for slew footing Stefan Persson who was injured on the play.
Clark GILLS, Mike BASSy Brian TROUTier al Harbour
Back when the NHL was played by Warriors!
LOL..Did you see how fast Nystrom skated away from Fotiu!!!!
