It’s the defence as a whole which is a mess. Samsonov has no support. And it’s not entirely his fault. He lacks the confidence because the team isn’t supporting him in the right way. Leafs have no defence strategy whatsoever. No man-to-man strategy. I barely see any back checking or two-way play from the players. They can’t seem to dump the puck out of their own end properly. They need to stop making pretty passes in their own end and just dump and chase to center ice. Keep it simple.
The fact that i still support this team to the very end is absolutely wild… i wanna give up knowing this lineup is never going to do it… but for some reason i always have faith somehow ☠️☠️
Leafs have never had a good goalie. That's why they can't go for deep playoff runs. They really need to make a move getting rid of Sammy (as he couldn't stop a beach ball if his life depended on it). Perhaps, looking to aquire Carter Hart or Petr Marzek. Really, just anyone that isn't Sammy or an Oilers goalie.
No faith in Samsonov right now. But you can't call up Hildeby. He too green. You can't throw this guy to the wolves. Let him grow his game.

This is an old problem for the Blue & White. A good goalie is hard to come by but you'd think the Buds would have learned how to keep one on hand by now.

Oh it's kind of easy here's the answer stop being loyal to a fault no 1 goalkeeper like jack Campbell put aside play martin Timmons should be top 4 defense he a natural point getter. The 40 year old gent should be 7 defenceman and when your outcoached in the playoffs have a secondary plan. Play your lines first continuity it works better and call timeouts to regroup you rarely do.etc.

I have to agree, while the defence was little help, those goals should have been routine for Samsonov to stop the puck, accept for two where he was screened. but this has happened before when he played as the goaltender with Washington. His confidence for whatever reason is shot, he should be sent to the Marlies for a while to rebuild his confidence,if possible before his contract is up.
The problem isn't the goal tending. you could have pretty much any goalie in net for the leafs and this would be happening.
The problem is they have no strength on the line. They need defensemen that are capable of clearing the front of the net. The last thing they need to look for is goaltending. they need 6 defensemen

The leafs defensive play is garbage. With Jones in net, they still gave up another 4 goals. Its their defensive play. It doesn't exist.

They need Campbell back
Leave him in the AHL to develop and become a future star. With this D core I believe it would destroy his development. Even Woll had his struggles with this D group. Perfect example was the game where he got injured. Had to make a lot of big stops.
The Leafs' played like trash in front of Samsonov, defensively & in transition. You can't make that many giveaways in your half of the ice & on the offensive blue line and expect any goalie to bail your ass out.
And then on top of it their positional play in dzone was off.
When you have a goalie that has shaken confidence, you can't make those errors that frequently. Hell, you can't even do that with a goalie that's playing great.
But at least the Klingberg and Reaves signings worked out.
