This was always the risk with keeping the Core 4 locked up. When you lock up 4 forwards to over half your cap that can't get you past the 2nd round (and previously couldn't get past game 7 of the 1st round), you limit your ability to patch up holes elsewhere. Before, it was the depth scoring, then it was the defense, now it's the goaltending. You should've broken up the core years ago to avoid this situation, but Leafs Nation didn't want to hear it and now the guy that was willing to do it was fired in favor of a guy that wouldn't fuss over the core like Shanahan wanted. I guess Leafs Nation and the Leafs organization doesn't want a winner. They just want a 1st round exit team that only gets past said round due to dumb luck. Until they prove otherwise, that won't change.

Samsonov's play last year was the anomaly…. this was the goal tending Samsonov was giving WSH. Same with Vanecek in NJ. Same issue.

As someone who doesn't watch the TML but decided to watch all the CBJ goals, does Toronto actually have defensemen or defense strategy? Samsonov was on his own on 4 of the five goals. The CBJs were unpestered in front of Samsonov, free range to maneuver to score. That OT goal, where was the TO player on Gaudreau? WTH! No help whatsoever for Samsonov. Even Fantilli's goal, which wasn't great, the TML defenseman played it wrong for a struggling goalie. Samsonov is trying to play goalie and defensemen at the same time. Doesn't work in the pros. This is a bigger system failure than just the goalie. But we know we know TML fans are merciless when they fixate on blaming one person.
Put Martin Jones in net until Woll finially comes back, then the leafs are the best team in the league again
There are too many blatant give aways in our own end that result in the puck going into our net . Now Sammy should have had 1 or 2 of them but the defense sucked tonite again.

I feel for Sammy, I don't even blame him for most of these goals tonight, but it's tough to watch him mentally collapse when he starts swimming or let's a stinky one in. The early goals weren't even that bad, I feel like he let them get to his head and got super rattled. Just knowing how he was starting to look again, swimming. He had Maybe one or 2 games where he.looked good, I almost thought he turned a corner. Goalie coach needs to slow down his game and get back to fundamentals, and basic positioning

Steve, maybe you should ask Brad's team for a goalie. They have two excellent goaltenders unlike your team. Maybe if you called Donny in the Bruins front office and asked him to trade Linus for Willy he probably would do it. I don't know how long you can go with 4 goals on 11 shots and not want to throw the guy out of the plane when you are flying over a volcano.. Brad's team doesn't have those issues thank goodness. Yup. That is exactly what i expected. This is our team. This is exactly who they are. We once again knew all off-season what we had. We again committed after almost a decade of the same problems. Do we waste picks or prospects to improve what we can? Probably shouldn't, but do, don't, likely wont matter. Its a team who gets points thus later picks, And are too soft for the playoffs. Unfortunately, the matthews era will likely be known as a wildly underachieving group, and a management group too scared to change it.
alright lets do the math
lets say we get Joseph Woll back in full form on Feb 19th (Game against the Blues)
there are 20 games between now and then if i'm counting right
Lets say they Give Jones 12 Games and Sammy 8 (to avoid overplaying Jones)
now lets say Jones wins 8/12 (gets 16 points)
and Sammy loses all of his but manages to get 4 to OT (gets 4 points)
we could get 20 points in 20 Games
which would mean they'd have 61 points in 53 Games which would put them on track for 94 Points in the season (maybe Woll gets that number up to 100)
That's still enough for the Leafs to get to the Playoffs with a Healthy Jones and Woll
I get the frustration with Sammy (I even share it) but I think Giving up assets or Overplaying Jones or risking Hildeby is a big mistake

Quite upset w myself, during the 2nd intermission of this game I was looking at some bets, ended up taking Avs ML (when the game was tied 1-1 after 1 and parlayed it w az-1.5 vs the ducks. HEAVILY considered cbj ml bc the odds were like +400 and cbj has become one of my favorite underdogs to bet, but I didn’t wanna blow my parlay on it so ultimately I just took Avs ml and yotes pl won $38.80 on a $8.84 bet. I’ll take the W

Toronto need to send Sammy down to the AHL team because if the Leafs wanna go deep in the playoffs this year they need to get a better goalie or just send Sammy down to the AHL and hope he can find he's game again. Because tomorrow night is the last game of 2023 then they only have 4 MONTHS!!! till playoffs start so if Jones and Woll gonna be are goalies for the playoffs I'm fine with that but if one of them go down in the playoffs the Leafs need a plan C. I'm sorry Steve but I think they need to call they're 42 year old Zamboni diver lol if the Leafs want to win the cup this year because Sammy is not are number one guy this year.
