@Maple Leafs de Toronto

Pierre LeBrun – 69 millions de dollars du contrat de Nylander sont consacrés à la signature de bonus.

Eh bien, ça me fait me sentir beaucoup mieux ! Ils ont fait ce que les Dodgers ont fait avec Ohtani.

Is there a reason why the mods aren’t even letting one of the official announcements stick?

Can someone please explain the benefits of this ?

The AAV seems top of the line.

Along with favorable payout of the money and a no movement clause, this seems like a great money contract and great structured contract (for the player).

I guess we won’t officially know until later but as a fan this does frustrate me to a degree. In all honesty, what other team was going to give him this kind of money? Same money from another team would need to be 13m+ (only 7 year contract) and then he’d be 35. Gaudreau got 9m.

The whole thing just irks me but it is what it is, happy he is staying, sad it is for 11.5m as I think that is a bit of an overpay but hey, the cap is going up so that solves all this! /s

Let me start by saying Nylander and Rielly are my favourite players, I’d rather have Nylander signed to this contract then not have him on my team, and I’ll block this contract from my memory and just celebrate his awesomeness by the next game. But……. how did the leafs manage to lose in almost each part of this contract (besides term). Like you’d think if you’re giving $11.5 million you wouldn’t have to give full NMC the length of the contract or you could give the full NMC and have a lower AAV. All in all I love the contract and love Nylander but I just don’t giving everything.

Just a quick note, this is not what the Dodgers did with Ohtani, as they instead deferred the payments. Functionally it is similar, as the actual salary for both of them is low compared to their AAV, however for Nylander is still getting his money throughout each year of the deal as a bonus, while Ohtani is getting his deferred money in the ten years following the expiration of his new deal. Thereby, the money in the signing bonus is more valuable to Nylander as he is getting it sooner than Ohtani, who is getting his money later, thereby reducing the value of that money. Needless to say, both of them have low salaries compared to the AAV, but the mechanics behind how it works are different for the deals.

*Edit, just rereading the comment, and its not really a quick note lol

    >They did what the Dodgers did with Ohtani

You have a gross misunderstanding either of what the Dodgers did or what this tweet means. There is absolutely 0 comparison between those deals.

The Dodgers are paying Ohtani $2 million per year for the next 10 years then they are paying him $68 million per year for the 10 after that (years he will no longer be playing baseball). Nylander just gets most of his yearly salary on July 1st and then collects a smaller salary biweekly (I believe they are paid biweekly) during the season. For example if he made $11.5 million next year he might get $10 million paid out on July 1st, then during the season get paid $1.5 million spread out over however many pay periods there are during the season. Its actually the opposite of Ohtani because the idea is it gives Nylander more money up front he can invest and grow while Ohtani is actually losing millions by deferring those payments 10 years essentially in an interest free account that also loses value with inflation.

This is literally the opposite of what the Dodgers did with Ohtani. This is almost all front loaded.

  8. TuloCantHitski

This is the exact opposite of what the Dodgers did. Ohtani made a team friendly move; Nylander made a Nylander-friendly move.

  9. TuloCantHitski

Given his profile, I fully expect Nylander to look awful at age 35-36 on the ice.

  10. dntstpblevin

So many folks on this sub post regularly about Marner being overpaid.

If you are one of these folks you have to hate this deal right? Right????

  11. Ithinkitstruetoo

I need this guys agent for my next contract negotiations. Congrats and keep your stick on the ice

  12. hunglikeafireant

The amount of people crying over a dude about to put up 110 points is crazy.

  13. Colin123mc

So you front load the contract to make it more tradable in the future. Then you give him a full NMC to nullify the positives of the signing bonus. Am I missing something?

  14. Rezerdez

This couldn’t be further from what the Dodgers did, but I can appreciate a good front loaded contract when I see one

  15. Griswaldthebeaver

Sotheby’s can’t even buy it out towards the end? That’s fucking incredible

  16. LegendaryVenusaur

Isn’t there a larger tax hit when paid as a bonus instead of income? I get hit with 50% on my bonus while income would be at the marginal tax rate.

  17. Wonderful-Sea3370

Leafs are destined to be a good regular season but trash playoff team. Is what it is

  18. Fluffy_Load297

Would be sick if they just made signing bonuses not count towards the cap

  19. DontToewsM3Bro

Who gives a fuck about how is he PAID this is Rogers money

Hell pay him $150 mil, the problem is the cap hit and the lack of playoff success

92 Million for 1 playoff series Win lmao

Shit Kucherov should be worth 500 million than

  20. Rare_Cartographer579

What’s the difference between signing bonus and just giving him the whole 92 million outright for the years of the contract?
