Thomas Drance is literally Mike from Surrey after rehab.

  2. Ruilin96

Now, we just have to convert Mike from Surrey.

Being a buyer is the only logical choice right now. We have Petey and Hronek about to get a huge raise, a ton of key depth pieces likely to leave in UFA, our entire core on career years, and our best forward (Miller) at the age where his skill could fall of a cliff abruptly (especially as a power forward.) We’re ripe to regress next year.

Don’t mortgage our entire future, but giving up our (late) first and some non blue-chip prospects to make a push is a no-brainer. Contention windows are shorter than ever in the modern NHL.

  4. Aside from Mike from Surrey, is there anyone out there who doesn’t believe yet?

Can Mike From Surrey please call into Canucks Talk. I’d pay good money to hear those two go at it. My only issue is I might have tinnitus after listening to it.

Don’t mind being a « buyer » at the TDL but I wouldn’t want to trade significant assets at this time. We haven’t even proved we’re a consistent playoff team yet let alone a contender, so why go all in on a rental when we’re not poised to win the cup?

Look at NJ – looked like they were going to be a perennial future contender given the age of the team, prematurely acquired Meier, and now he’s getting paid $8.8M while they’re not even in a wildcard spot.

If I’m the Canucks now and I do want to bolster the team, something like what Jim Benning did to acquire a guy like Toffoli would be pretty spot on actually, except this time, the trade would actually make more sense timing wise. But I wouldn’t want to do much more than that unless you’re getting someone with term at a good cap hit.

For me we already have done the buys, anything now risks taking this season from good chance to all or nothing followed by a 10 year rebuild as we have nothing left

Ya’ll give Drance way too much flak.
He literally just follows logic and data. It’s all he’s doing here as well.

His takes while often negative (this team has been shit for over a decade before this year) they are never that far off from reality.

I think BPA applies more now than in the draft (at least after the first 10 picks). At least when buying rentals you know exactly what you are buying unlike the draft.

Ya if possible grab a center to fully unleash 6/49 but this team will score with or without adding a center. You know they will. Maybe not ideal but Blueger is not chopped liver. So if there’s a choice between an above average center vs a playoff pedigree defenseman I’d prioritize the defenseman for the epic playoff slog.

There will be injuries and the D needs to batter and best Mackinnon, Eichel, MacDavid etc and the defense also has to continue scoring with not a lot of rest.

  10. Dodd is right. We need to go for a relatively big piece to really solidify this team at the top end.

He also admitted he was wrong about the « anything can happen » mantra on yesterday’s show.

The thing about growing a beard is you don’t realize how bad it truly looks. Keep it to radio only Drancer!

  13. A non rental 2C or some depth D but I’m not willing to give away the store for it.

I trust the management crew more than me or our local media opinions, so I’ll just sit back and enjoy this great run and the smile on the team’s faces when they drop their guard.

  14. I’m still against them spending big assets on pending UFAs but they should be going all in after a long-term 2C like Cirelli

If we lose one of these 3 Swedish kids, it has to be for someone who’s gonna stick around and be relevant for this possible 3-4 year window we’re seemingly opening. Then again, maybe it’s a pure rental and it helps to navigate the OEL penalty next year, but you can’t lose a premium prospect for that IMO

Pat and Jim have made good moves so far, I have faith …

  16. When it was announced Rutherford was joining the Canucks front office, the two things I remembered about him most were his epic trades for Phil Kessel and Nic Bonino leading up to the playoffs. I seem to recall a few people in hockey fan sphere questioning if Rutherford was off his rocker to trade for those guys.

I’ve liked the depth guys Allvin got us this year. I really liked how the coach has motivated players and made a system that works. I’ve loved our core is crushing expectations. So yeah I’m in for buying. And I’m hoping that Rutherford/Allvin helps find some more diamonds to bring in.

We need a 2nd line centre that’s reliable enough so we can keep the lotto line together. I genuinely think if we get a centre who can do this we will be cup favourites this season

  18. KwamesCorner

Drance is a cringe listen. But he makes good points.

Something about the way he talks makes me want to bully him.

  19. Individual_Present93

Yeah with all the cap space……………….

  20. I’ve been a fan since I was a kid in the 80s and the number of opportunities that teams might get are often really small. One of the what-ifs I have always had is if they had paid the price to get that WCE era team a stronger goalie. This team has caught lightning in a bottle and they might as well capitalize. That doesn’t mean fully mortgaging the future, but sometimes you need to take advantage of a particular moment.

  21. Fools gold. True contenders are consistently that for a few seasons. One good season and people are ready to sell the farm and plan the parade.

  22. electricalphil

Anyone saying trade any of our three Swedes or Brustowitz (what’s his name) is crazy. We need those guys

  23. GiraffePrint_Speeder

I like the talk this morning around Jake Guentzel, and going for a true rental that we have no intention on resigning.
We’d probably have to give out a top prospect like Hogs + our first.
It doesn’t have to be Jake Guentzel either, but someone that we don’t intend to resign, but that will push us on top for this year.
A true rental to win a cup before we need to pay everyone next year.
What are people’s thoughts on that
