Rangers have some work to do. Today was a win like the games they were winning earlier in the season that they didn't play as well as other games. It wasn't concerning because they had won several games before and after, but because this win was stopping a losing streak, the Rangers know that while they did enough to find a way to win, they haven't shown the better play they were doing earlier in the season. Its important they play some better teams and show they still have the chops to compete against the top teams. You can tell by their reaction they felt a sense of relief but not like ok, we got our mojo back.

The problem with Montréal they should be lower this week but other teams suck more than Montréal therefore Montréal rise a spot. Also Montréal Effort was not there in the game against Philly and the San José Sharks. Habs has so many problems including bad Referee (Which is the standard in the NHL) , paying too much money for Ordinary middle of the pack player , too many injured player, etc but getting the max of out they players on the ice is not one of them.

Look, both of top spots are flash burns and lots of luck. It’s great to see average teams get some insane wins and it take a lot of will power and drive to do it. But is it sustainable? From them? Na. The Avs? I could say the same about most if it except them being average. They’ve also dug deep and willed their wins the last few weeks. But they’re a great team too. Finally coming together and will peak at the perfect time if they don’t loose half of their top six. There’s a handful of teams that are a coin toss for the cup so I won’t say they’re winning it or something stupid but they’re one of the 5 or 7 that are in that coin toss. Jets? Van? Not in it for sure

I always thought a power ranking was "forget the standings, who is the best team right now"
You're too committed to not letting teams make big jumps that you're losing sight of what power rankings are. The best team for the last month or two is obviously the Oilers. Maybe you could make a case for 1 or 2 other teams but certainly not 7. If the Oilers didnt have the start they did and have to climb up from the bottom of your rankings is there any doubt they'd be top 3? If no, then they should be top 3, otherwise they're not power rankings if you're taking the start of the season into account
