As a Stars fan, I remember watching that game in Feb 2017 against the Senators where we own goaled in a very similar manner— the drop pass back by Jiri Hudler with an empty net getting ready for the power play.
My memory misremembered it as Klingberg, and while he was back there on the ice missing the drop pass from Hudler, he had his own own goal earlier that season when a sophomore McDavid snapped a 10-game goal drought bouncing a puck off Klingberg's stick and past Lehtonen. Man, the Stars really had some defensive goofs during the Lindy Ruff years 😅. But that bad season butterfly effected into our 2017 Draft which I'm very thankful for GM Nill and our scouts absolutely home-running our picks that year 😁 (yes we missed Makar, but Heiskanen I'm still thrilled with and thought at the time was our best choice at 3rd too, plus that 2nd round Robertson pick was robbery 😮💨)

Emblematic of this team and season. Trash. Every time they look like they have something figured out, they regress. Another season missing the playoffs. Should have burned the house down years ago. Instead trying to get the most out of the final years for Sid but resigning Malkin and Letang was a huge mistake.

Fans of [insert your team's name here] worrying that this is next for them. Not sure what one can say about this. 199/200 times Malkin cleanly receives the pass and starts a rush in the other direction.
That mistake was bigger than the arena they were playing in.
This sums up the Penguins season, get 5 assists in 1 period a few weeks back and then this, absolutely no consistency
Surprised it doesn't happen more often.
If you score on your own net prior to a power play, the power play should be negated.
If the team going on the power play scores while the goalie is pulled, they should still be given the power play.

I don't understand how either Letang or Malkin are that casual given where they are on the ice. I know you don't want to grip your stick too tightly…but wow. Maybe a little tighter than that.

Malkin half assed his way thru this entire game. This type of shit is why a HOF loaded lineup will miss the playoffs yet again. Sid cant win every game by himself
The penguins are not a good TEAM. They have some very good players but they are geting old and dont gel together anymore. Its time to trade some of these guys off for young talented players that offer energy to this lineup.
Time for the Pens to become huge sellers as the trade deadline approaches. The only player not available should be Crosby. Let him play out his time, surround him with 18 year olds and a new coaching staff and work on getting all first round picks for the next seven years. With luck they can trade Karllson for a third round pick and some stick tape and Malkin for a fourth and two practice pucks.

I put this just as much on Letang for that late no-look no-communication pass as much as it is on Malkin for fumbling it.
