  1. As a original Sharks fan I really respect what George McFee has done for the franchise and for the city of Las Vegas. I remember when we got the Sharks back in 1991 what kind of excitement and pride we had in the South Bay just having our own professional team that didn't say San Francisco or Oakland on it. Even though its been only 2 years I really enjoy our new rivalry with Las Vegas I can't wait until we open the season next month with back to back games against the Golden Knights! This is my personal opinion but I think that the NHL wanted to get the Knights off to a fast start and build a solid fan base to "beat" the soon to be Las Vegas Raiders. I know a lot of fans up here are devastated that the Raiders are moving to Las Vegas and I just hope that you can continue your magic down there after the Raiders opening season. Just one more month until opening face October 2nd Go Sharks!

  2. Long before the first puck was ever dropped at T-Mobile Arena, team owner Bill Foley and GM McPhee announced their objective for the VGK, which was to build a playoff contender within 3 years and a Cup contender in 6.  After accomplishing both with the success of the inaugural season, McPhee really had no choice but to opt for a "win now" approach.  The loss of Neal and Perron to FA immediately changed the complexion of the "Golden Misfits", however, McPhee did well to lock in several key "misfits" from season 1 to ensure a core group from that storybook season remains together for several years to come; so a part of that mystique will remain even as they'll be moving away from it each successive season.

I don't see this team falling off the map of serious contenders for years to come, given those long term contracts to key players….Stone's may seem excessive now, but will be a bargain in 2022.  A good core of misfits and great additions that are locked in for several seasons says that this team should continue to have success in the immediate future and beyond.

  3. I disagree with the misfit label. I think it was just a television story. Except for Marchessault, Fleury, and coach Gallant, most of the players were happy to get more playing time. Some of them were happy to have a job. I remember McNabb being interviewed after scoring the winning goal against the Kings, his old team. He was asked about how it felt scoring the goal against the team that let him go. But he said he didn't have any hard feelings about being exposed in the expansion draft. His comment was that there were a lot of defensive players in preseason, and he wasn't sure he would even make the team.

I think what made the Golden Knights successful was not a "chip on their shoulder" or that they were misfits, but the ability of Mcphee's staff for evaluating underutilized talent, along with Gallant's tactic of rolling his lines, which created team cohesion as everybody was ready to play. Granted, compared to other teams, there was a lot of parity on the lines, with the fourth line being a bit of a specialty team.

The ingredients that created the inaugural season for Vegas may never be repeated. But I don't think losing the attitude of misfits or rejects has anything to do with it.

  4. I would just like to point out that Joe veleno what was projected to go first overall like 2 or 3 years before the draft

  5. You know it's getting deep into the off season when were talking about the history of the Vegas Knights!!!! 🙂

  6. Excellent thumbnail. If Fleury isn't the best goalie in VGK's epic, storied history, he's definitely top 5. Don't you dare argue with me on that one!

  7. One of the weirdest moves from the Vegas expansion draft is the moves Stl made. They protected Reaves from being taken in the expansion draft and left Perron exposed. Then they traded Reaves a few weeks later for Oskar Sundqvist. Later that season, Reaves gets traded to Vegas and in the off season Perron signs in Stl for the third time. Interesting how that all played out and now Perron and Sundqvist are cup champs!

  8. I'm not sure Vegas has a true first line centre. Karlsson and Stastny are pretty good but neither of them are true elite centres

  9. Vegas is an awesome story. Throughout sports history expansions teams have been defined as…One way. Charming, but ultimately failures for a few years before sustained success. The NHL has done what no other league could: they nailed the expansion formula that truly allowed a new team to hit the ground running, sustainably, from day 1. I believe Seattle will be the same.

  10. While losing Tuch was a bummer for Minnesota, Losing Dumba would've been a lot worse. At that point it wasn't clear if they would've protected Brodin or Dumba, but had Dumba gone to Vegas, Minnesota fans might be missing out on their likely MVP for next year.

  11. The worst thing that happened to Seattle was being the 2nd child in this expansion duo. I don't see GMs running to give them a bunch of assets like they did for Vegas. Benning said at the time of the draft that you'll be losing someone anyway, doesn't make sense to give away 2 assets, have them draft a guy, all to save one asset. The cap moves make sense but giving them first rounders and good middling prospects to protect other prospects just fills more holes in your team than you are saving. They have to take a guy. Take the hit and fill that hole. Don't make 3 holes to avoid one hole. Most of your A prospects are either gonna be protected or won't even be eligible. Vegas made out like bandits with the expansion draft since the rules were so new and kind of scary at first glance.

Also, that list would look a lot different if they didn't make trades. They took some guys in the expansion draft cause of the trades they made which came with promises they wouldn't take other players. So to say they would not have been a playoff team if they went with straight expansion draft players I don't think is necessarily true.

  12. Up for a challenge? Think you can do 20 mins on Seattle before they play their first season? That'd be impressive!

  13. I think Vegas did an amazing job their first year but after that did the same thing as every other team and started throwing away picks and overpaying for washed up players. Now they are a middle of the road team like everyone else who makes those mistakes

  14. A local (Vancouver) sportscaster, Matt Sekeres, gets unhinged when the Knights come up in conversation! He contends they were given a metaphorical red carpet by the league!
