  1. Penguins are kind of in a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation when moving forward. It's tough to break up the core and start some kind of rebuild but the lack of youth and prospects is closing in with the Jaws theme playing in the background. They could fall really quickly and not have much in the way of prospects even without doing anything. Rebuilding is painful too but an initiated rebuild is often times quicker than denial until you've gone too far and lack any building blocks to start with.

  3. You trade Guentzel if the team isn’t in a playoff position or a point of one by the deadline, and he’s not signed. Have to do that. That’s the only player who’s going to net some prime assets that the Pens are in a position to trade

  4. Been a penguins fan since i was 4. We have had 3 cups in my time waching. We have had some good years but somthing different needs done crosby is still the best, Letang still has a few good years, and malkin needs to go hes to slow and makes far to many mistakes. I completely agree we need youth infused we need prospects its time to rebuild.

  5. We've seen what happens to teams when they deny a rebuild for many seasons, i.e. San Jose and Detroit. As a Pen, we need this to happen sooner or later but Dubas and the core are creatures of habit and stubbornness.

I have a feeling they'll deny selling until Crosby's contract is up, and that's tough…

  6. Shannon you’ve mentioned you haven’t been the biggest Pens fan throughout the years. I was wondering if you were at least a fan of Sid, Mario, or Jagr.

  7. I say trade all of them and do a full rebuild. Give each of the big four players a chance to win a cup with another team and get all the prospects and picks and third line centers they deal you.

  8. Guentzel isn't going anywhere rebuild/retool or not. Neither is Sid. Letang likely safe but not for sure. Everyone else is gone if they go that route

  9. Pens fan here. They’ve gotta do something. As much as I love this team, they’ve just gotten too slow. First, they need to figure out their Power Play. They have too much fire power to be so awful on the man advantage. I’ve watched college hockey games with better Power Play units than the Pens. Second, they need some youth and speed. They’ve just gotten too slow and can’t keep up.

  10. Im prepping for this team to be completely terrible soon. I feel like we havent had to plan for the future in years in order to be a competitive team and its starting to show now. Believe it or not Sidney Crosby is not immortal (i know his stats make it seem that way) and that goes for the rest of the team too. I saw a infographic that said we arent just the oldest nhl team but the oldest team in na professional sports. As for Guentzel I think trading him is definitely a mistake unless we are biting the bullet and starting the rebuild now. Not a bad idea honestly probably the smartest thing for the overall future of the team but I genuinely care more about Crosbys legacy being cemented in pgh than having a decent enough team once hes gone. In a weird way I kinda want the pens to be bad for a little while as a little mourning period for the wonderful years this core has given us. The plays, the goals, the highlights, the championships, I want this era to have time to breathe and I want it to be painfully obvious how good we've had it.

  11. As a Penguins fan since 1990 (I was 6), I have only seen 1 rebuild, which was early-mid 2000s. I think Pittsburgh, for the fan's sake, and to not waste any years remaining for the big boys, should rebuild now. It would be sad to see those guys go. But from the business side of things, it will speed up the rebuild. If they all retire a Penguin, I could see Pittsburgh put up Toronto, Edmonton, or Buffalo-length rebuild years to get back on track. If they get something in return now, they might turn it into a 4-5 year rebound. I would hate for McDavid to be turning grey before Pittsburgh makes the playoffs again.

With the luck they've had with top draft picks, it would be great to get another player fighting for the top 5 players of all time again. Pittsburgh and Edmonton fans have been so lucky for the past 40-45 years. There are original 6 teams that have never seen the kind of talent that Gretzky, Lemieux, Jagr, Crosby and McDavid have provided their teams. Edmonton had a long wait between Gretz and McD, but Pittsburgh has had at least one of the greatest players of all time on their roster every season since 1984. That's 40 years. No other team can say that. Time to start the rebuild 😢

  12. The problem is we've basically got 2 years left after this season with Malkin and Letang and that's just not nearly enough time to even do a re-tool. I can see Crosby sticking around for at least 4 more years until he's 40 or so but idk if he'd want to agree to a plan that involves not being competitive for the rest of Malkin and Letang's careers.
