@Jets de Winnipeg

  1. With what the Canucks payed for Lindholm and what Winnipeg gave up for Monahan, it would seem to be a sellers market this year. All of the best teams have areas of the game they would like to improve. Combine that with some surprise performances both good and bad, it would appear to be a good time to sell.

I expect some more trades with the cup contending teams likely overpaying. The prices have been set high and there are more than a few teams looking to upgrade. At this rate tho, the trade deadline will be boring as heck. All the exciting trades are being made right now.

  2. Big mistake. They should have traded Vilardi, Iafallo, Kupari, and a 2nd for superstar Dubois.

  3. Jets didn't overpay, Monaham is good, always has been, he just fragile. A late 1st round pick, for extra depth is worth it.

  4. Massive underpayment for what Monahan brings. You cannot complain about that, though, because the first round pick is just found money, and the loss of the only competent player outside of Montreal's first line should send them spiralling through the last portion of the season, which was probably why the trade was made now rather than closer to the deadline when they could have brought in a higher-end prospect and a first alongside him.

  5. The price for Monahan was only going to go up the longer he stayed on the trade block. And yes the Jets give up a first round pick, but it's a late pick. It's not like they gave up a top 5-10 pick. And they have Montreal's second round pick from the Dubois trade anyway.

The Jets needed a legit 2C that can win draws and help their anemic PP. Monahan can fill that role, and allow Perfetti and Ehlers to get more ice time.

  6. This is the price all teams will have to pay for a player like this at this point

  7. Good deal for both teams. The Jets have MTL 2nd round pick, so as the Habs fall to get better odds on Celebrini, that pick the Jets have gets better.

  8. This is not an overpay. A low 1st-round pick for Monahan is about right, in my estimation, given market conditions (market conditions being several teams looking to add a decent middle-6 center for a playoff run). What Vancouver paid for Lindholm WAS an overpay, although I think they felt that getting rid of Kuzmenko in the deal made it okay (I mean, it's not often that a team is trying to get rid of a player who had 39 goals and 35 assists last season, but maybe they felt he wasn't capable of that anymore, I dunno). I think if the Habs had waited a bit longer, they might have gotten an even better deal, but doing so also has the intrinsic risk of Monahan getting injured and losing all value as a trade piece. Remember, he and Lindholm were the two best centers available on expiring contracts, and nobody else on that list comes even close to them (Henrique is basically the only other available center in the same stratosphere as Lindholm and Monahan – and since he had a pretty great January 2024 – attaining basically a point-per-game in the new year – there's a small chance he commands a 1st-round pick as well….of course, there is more risk with Henrique, given he's 4 years older than Lindholm and Monahan). So Vancouver and Winnipeg have both shown the remaining top teams of the league that they're not screwing around. If Henrique is dealt, I'd put Colorado, Edmonton and Vegas as the most likely destinations (and they all have 2024 1sts to part with).

  9. oh boy it's the most exciting player in the league sean monahan who was quoted with his electric reaction to the trade "guess i'm going to winnipeg." he said

  10. This is a horrible trade! Dude has had like a billion surgeries and if he gets hurt the jets basically traded for air

  11. its definitely not an overpay. As much as I like Hughes' asset management a late first round pick is so overrated and having to pay just that for as good a player as Monahan Id say the jets are really happy rn

  12. Title should have been
Can't Beleive MTL got 2 first round picks fir Monahan. And he will resign in Mtl next year

  13. Not a Jets fan but I'll be rooting for any Canadian Team to get the cup, this is great for both teams

  14. This guy has no idea what he’s talking about

Imagine thinking giving a first for Monahan is an overpay lol

He’s on pace for 20 goals, 60 points, over 50% in the face off dot, can play on the PP and PK, can centre your second or third line, or can play on the wing, and he just makes everyone on his line better.

Every single team in a playoff spot would have given a first for him

  15. Jets are screwed in the playoffs, yeah having good goals against numbers are good, but if you struggle to score, alls it takes is to run into a hot goalie and your done.

Just look at heat happened vs the Habs in 2021

  16. Thank God the Rangers didn’t give a 1st for him. Saving Drury from himself perhaps? He’s a great player, but as a Rangers fan just not the type of player we need. 1994 and 2023 should be written in large letters on Drury’s desk when figuring out what moves to make. Not to ship all his talent out for a 1 year window like in 94 but they need to fill their roster with the right players, not the best players. This isn’t exactly a team short on talent. They can’t seriously move Kakko as thin as they are on RW without an extraordinary return and for what I know which is limited the only way I’d want a 1st rounder to go the other way is if they could swipe Henrique and Vatrano from the Ducks.

  17. Between you and me, I hope the guy with the cockatoo on his shoulder helps the Jets win the Cup. He's quite an acquisition.

  18. when monahan is healthy….he is perfect for the playoffs….big, physical, can score isnt a risk defensively…whats not to like….when healthy of course

  19. As a Habs fan, I am sad to see Monahan go, but am happy for Winnipeg. Even with Monahan, the Canadiens have improved this season, but still just don't have the horses to make the playoffs.

The Jets will add some needed depth at center as a result of this trade. If Monahan stays healthy, then the Jets should win this trade, but this is no fleecing as was the case with the PLD trade with L.A.

  20. Monahan is going to play his ass off and test free agency to get that 5M contract from someone. on the upside Winnipeg is going to get a player who plays his ass off. Hope ya'll win the cup for real!

  21. Flames unloading him because of his cap hit, and the Jets trading for him in part I would assume because of his cap hit.
I honestly think the Habs could've gotten more later on, to a contender that had very little room on their cap.

  22. Both the Canucks and the Jets GMs wanted to get the guys they believe will fix the needs in their lineups early in order to use the extra games with the additions to both acclimate them as well as try to win their divisions. They have to think their best chance to advance in the playoffs is to face wildcard opponents in the first round while having home ice advantage into next rounds and they are willing to pay the price to try to make that happen.
