We are just not a good team this year. Tre did a pretty terrible job in the offseason. After the first two lines, this team can’t do much. And Mo can only do so much on D.
Honestly we’re not getting anywhere without depth scoring. It’s not coaching, it’s not the individual skills of the top guys… It’s just the lack of depth players that contribute. Trei has a tough job coming in and changing up a team with so little time so that might mean this year is a wash. But next off season some of these things have to be addressed.

Unfortunately, next off-season there won’t be much he can do. Big cap-crunch year with Matthews & Nylander raking in an additional $6.5 million in cap space between them, and Marner and Tavares being in the last years of theirs. We might be able to count on Minten and Cowan for some decent, low-cost offensive options, but we’re not going to be in the right space to really amp up the team much beyond that, even if we dump a bunch of contracts. Players on cheap entry/1 year contracts will be the play (Knies, Minten, Cowan, Benoit, Woll, possibly Hildeby, etc.) Don’t think they’re going to be grabbing a top defenseman or a stud 3C to pad out those weak spots.
