I just started liking NJ even more. Love Marky
I smell dirty pool by NJD?
As a Canucks fan, that deal looks like the kinda that set is back by years
Short term gain for long term pain. It is almost never beneficial to trade a solid prospect for and old veteran player who essentially becomes a rental
As a Devils fan I like Markstrom as a netminder but at 34, how long is he going to be serviceable? I'd rather Fitz package Holtz and other prospects for a goalie like Saros, Askarov, or Swayman and lock up a goaltender longterm over the next 7-8 years.
Unless it was above 2 mil/season retained thats a big L for Calgary
NJ should not be making moves this year. They're a year away; let the young kids grow and find a goalie this offseason.
His contract doesnt suck. And its only for 2 more years. Besides the salary cap is going up. The flames are happy with his performance. Why should they retain.
At this point NJ should keep Holtz and wait for the offseason to address goaltending.
Holtz for Markstrom straight up isn't a smart move for the Devils. Holtz struggles with NHL-level skating but you can see him improving, slowly, every game. With salary retained, I could see it, as a "win now" move, but I'd only really feel confident about trading Holtz for Saros. This roster is promising but isn't good enough to win now, anyway. The numbers are way off.
If the Devils are open to trading Holtz, Calgary should consider retaining 50% of his contract even if it is for 2 more seasons after this. Holtz is already producing more value than his contracts worth. Holtz is a stud and fully worth it.
As a Devils fan, I'm so relieved that this deal fell through. Trading a 22 year old with Rocket Richard potential at his peak who's going to be an elite goal scorer for the next decade in exchange for a 34 goalie past his prime who's probably going to be retiring in 2 years or less would set this franchise back years. We don't even know if Toffoli will resign, and yet Fitz is planning to trade the guy who's supposed to be Jack's triggerman for the next decade for an almost 40 year old Markstrom? Absolutely not. Fitz getting that desperate to make the playoffs is horrible for this team. Just look at what the Islanders did to themselves. They traded all of their elite young prospects for old veterans and their window was slammed shut after only two years of contention as a consequence, and now they don't have any cap space left to resign Dobson. That will happen to us next if Fitz starts trading our prospects. Let them cook. This year is just a setup and that's totally fine. Our window is only just beginning to open. There's not need to rush it yet. I really hope Fitz doesn't, but this news has me very worried now.
Markstrom and Hanifin for a package of players, prospects and picks?
Calgary is known not to retain salary I heard.
Devils should wait until offseason.
I don’t like the idea of trading Holtz or more of the future for a very short term investment.
I wouldn't have been in love with this move as a Devils fan and that's knowing what kind of season Markstrom's had. The fact that this deal, while dead for now, could be revived at any moment makes me nervous.
If Markstrom were four or five years younger and more consistent from season to season, you do the deal, salary retention or not, but this seems like a short-sighted panic move on Tom Fitzgerald's part.
Flames are in no rush to trade Markstrom.
The Devils need to secure a legit number 1 goalie with playoff success, if they have any playoff hopes. That's why they are willing to overpay.
Don't think the Devils and Flames are done yet negotiating.
Richard potential is a reach. Does he have the potential to be a 30 goal scorer throughout his career … yes. Maybe a few 40 goal seasons but unlikely he’ll ever reach 50 in his career.
the term you're searching for is trade currency.
