The first paragraph Doug was responding to trading players (stastny, shatty) while being in a current playoff spot.

He also says in other sections that he would only trade players if it really makes a big impact on your franchise’s future. I can’t imagine sunny, kappy, Marco and Blais will fetch much. The biggest/toughest decision would be if people start calling about Buch, who has 1 year left on his deal.

I just want to see playoff hockey. I realize they aren’t winning the Cup. But this team can win a round or two if Binner is playing lights out.

Sell the expiring contracts and EXTEND dah Buch!

I’m confident we will make some moves for the future. If the plan is to extend Buchnevich then no way we trade him. If Army already knows we are going to move on from him at the end of the contract moving him now makes the most sense. We need good defense and don’t really have a star coming up. Perunovich can’t be relied upon at this point. Although kessel has really impressed me so far. The older guys with expiring contracts might fetch a third. But if we traded a second for Leddy I think there is hope.

    Just re-sign Bucci Mane please.

And if Vladdy is available for the right price, bring him home.

Doug can “believe” this all he wants, but the fact is we are STILL paying for the sins of not signing Petro and panic signing Krug, Faulk, Scandella, and Leddy and giving 2 massive contracts to young unproven players. Now, will Thomas continue his ascent? Potentially. Will Kyrou find his confidence again and get his career back on an elite, top 6 trajectory? Id say it’s more of a coin flip.

No one wants to make a “hockey” trade for our guys. Doug has always loved using value to trade for similar value, but that is not happening. He made the shit sandwich and now he has to eat it, painful bite after painful bite.

They had one shot to change the course of this decline, and Tkachuk either didn’t want to be here or the Flames chose better players than we could/would offer. But the constraints this team is under are an albatross that isn’t going anywhere, and we are not a market or have an ownership that can absorb a buyout in the offseason.

It’s purgatory until we can shed some of this burden organically

Rip the band-aid off and trade Buch. He doesn’t fit the timeline and helps us win during a time we should be losing.

I’m glad he’s sticking to his plan. The reality is the playoffs are a low to medium shot anyway based on projections (even if we happen to be in 8th at a given moment). If there are moves that help the team for the next 1-3 years he’s gotta do it and roll the dice that it means finishing on the outside.
